Feast for Peace Celebrates Middle Eastern Food, Music and Dance

Young women from Palestine and Israel to speak about their work for peace at August 1 event

On Thursday, August 1, four young leaders from Israel and the West Bank, all 21 years old, will talk about their experiences living in conflict and violence and discuss their ongoing work for peace. Their discussion will be the centerpiece of the third annual “Feast for Peace: A Cultural Celebration of the Middle East,” an evening of Middle Eastern food, music and dance presented by Creativity for Peace. Fourteen teenage girls who are attending Creativity for Peace’s 2013 summer program in New Mexico will also be on hand to meet the public.

The event takes place at 5:30 p.m. at the Scottish Rite Center, 463 Paseo de Peralta, in Santa Fe. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Advance purchases can be made on the news and events page at www.creativityforpeace.com.

Falafel, hummus, dolmas, baklava and many other Middle Eastern delicacies will be served by Adobo Catering, Caffé Greco, Chocolate Maven, Dot Chai, Jambo Café, Nile Café, Marja Custom Caterer, Omira Bar and Grill, Providers, Pyramid Café, Treehouse Café and Bakery, Zia Diner, Chef John Connell, Chef Sandra Squadrilli, and Janet Eigner.

Entertainment will include music by the Albuquerque band Sadaquah and dancing of the hora and the dabke, popular folk dances in Israel and Palestine, led by Santa Fean Joan Kafri and company. The speakers are part of Creativity for Peace’s young leader program, which offers year-round training to young Palestinian and Israeli women to be future leaders and peacemakers. They are: Yuval Dadoash, Jewish Israeli, age 21, from Kibbutz Kfar Hanassi (2007 Creativity for Peace camper) Siwar Hamati, Palestinian living in Israel, age 21, from Acco (2007 camper) Majdal Ashmer, Palestinian from the West Bank, age 21, from Ramallah (2008 camper) Yaara Tal, Jewish Israeli, age 21, from Kibbutz Dorot (2008 camper)

Since its inception in 2003, Creativity for Peace has brought 208 young women of Jewish, Muslim and Christian faiths from Israel and Palestine to Santa Fe to engage in an intensive session of peacemaking employing compassionate dialogue, art-making, field trips and social time. After the summer camp (this year from July 16-August 6) the young women return home and continue to meet year-round and take part in leadership and communication training offered by Creativity for Peace in the Middle East.

Feast for Peace is underwritten by: Los Alamos National Bank Anonymous Santa Fe New Mexican Sue Barnum

Creativity for Peace trains young Palestinian and Israeli women to partner as leaders by breaking down barriers of anger and prejudice, facilitating friendships, and inspiring action to promote peace. Graduates of the young leader program are already moving into positions of responsibility in Israeli and Palestinian organizations.
