NAME OF ACTIVITY UNIT: Planning Your Future
TASK: List reasons why planning is important.
ACTIVITY TYPE: Integration, SCANS
APPROXIMATE TIME: One to two class periods
MATERIALS: Internet access, paper, and pencil
PROCEDURE:
1. Go to www.lifesplaybook.com. This website is devoted to Academic Hall of Fame Athletes. The athletes featured in this on line resource talk about the dedication required both in reaching their goals and staying there once they were achieved. It’s a great site for students who find a number of reasons to admire professional athletes.
2. Have each student select one athlete and read the information included for each including stats, quotes on miscellaneous subjects such as character, perseverance, and the excerpt from the book.
3. Have students record the information in notes to compile into a biographical report about the athlete.
4. Ask students to volunteer to share inspiring words or advice from the athlete they read about or something they admire about that person.
ENRICHMENT: Ask students how they want to be remembered. Have students write a paragraph or a brief essay to himself or herself. Put each essay in a self-addressed (stamped) envelope and give (or mail) to the student when he/she graduates in four years.
