RONALD D. BARTON, 12 SENIOR PASTOR OF SHADY OAK BAPTIST CHURCH IN 13 GREENVILLE, FOR HIS FAITHFUL SERVICE AND 14 OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO HIS 15 CONGREGATION AND HIS COMMITMENT TO HIS FAMILY 16 AND COMMUNITY, AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO 17 HIM IN ALL OF HIS FURTHER ENDEAVORS. 18 19 Whereas, Dr. Ronald D. Barton, the youngest of seven children, 20 was born to Mr. Willis F. Barton and Mrs. Mary Louise Barton in 21 Greenville, South Carolina; and 22 23 Whereas, a graduate of Berea High School, Dr. Barton entered 24 Morris College and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social 25 Studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Morris College 26 School of Divinity with a Bachelor of Divinity degree and a 27 Doctor of Divinity degree; and 28 29 Whereas, realizing his true gift and calling early, Dr. Barton began 30 preaching at the age of fifteen and has lead the congregations of 31 Central Baptist Church in Columbia and Shady Oak Baptist 32 Church of Greenville as pastor for a combined total of twenty-two 33 years; and 34 35 Whereas, Dr. Barton has motivated his own congregation at Shady 36 Oak Baptist Church to actively engage in an emphasis on ministry 37 development and community empowerment, inspiring over fifty 38 additional ministries purposed to build and expand the Kingdom of 39 God; and 40 41 Whereas, leading the congregation into a new Worship Center and 42 Administrative Complex, Dr. Barton currently oversees plans for

1 [835] 1 1 the construction of the Shady Oak Church Community 2 Empowerment Center, which will house the community 3 empowerment project, as well as the Shady Oak Baptist Church 4 Faith Dome, including a 2,200 seat worship facility, video 5 production studio, daycare center, educational complex, and 6 administrative suite; and 7 8 Whereas, Dr. Barton, a dedicated community leader, shares his 9 faith and vision in many associations, including his position as 10 former Dean of the Reedy River Congress of Christian Education 11 and membership in the Baptist Educational and Missionary 12 Convention of South Carolina, the Board of Evangelism of the 13 Progressive National Baptist Convention, and the Hampton 14 University Minister’s Conference; and 15 16 Whereas, proclaiming his message far beyond the doors of Shady 17 Oak Baptist Church, Dr. Barton has preached extensively across 18 the United States and abroad and has achieved national recognition 19 for a sermon included in the book, Outstanding Black Sermons, 20 Volume 4; and 21 22 Whereas, Dr. Barton serves as a role model for the African- 23 American community in fighting for the Martin Luther King, Jr. 24 holiday for Greenville County and helping to organize voter 25 registration drives, encouraging others to take part in their 26 community; and 27 28 Whereas, Dr. Barton is truly an inspiration to his congregation and 29 the community as a whole, living by the motto “Stay focused on 30 God and all of life will be clearer”. Now, therefore, 31 32 Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives 33 concurring: 34 35 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 36 resolution, commend and honor Dr. Ronald D. Barton, Senior 37 Pastor of Shady Oak Baptist Church in Greenville, for his faithful 38 service and outstanding contributions to his congregation and his 39 commitment to his family and community in pursuit of his abiding 40 faith and wish him well in all of his further endeavors. 41 42 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 43 Dr. Ronald D. Barton.
