Appendix A: Calculation of MSE Area

The calculation of multi-scale entropy area (MSE Area) consists of three steps. (Ref.6)

The first step: Obtain the coarse-grained sequences of PC {X(τ )}

jt X(t ) = 1 z jt i (a) i=( j - 1)t + 1

where {z1, z2, . . ., zN} is the time series of PC

N: data length of PC; τ : the scale factor; 1 ≤ j ≤ N/ τ

The second step: Calculation of SampEn for each coarse-grained sequence {X(τ )}

(τ ) MSE = {SampEn(τ ), τ=1,2,…60} (b)

SampEn measures the negative natural logarithm of an estimate of the

conditional probability that epochs of length m that match point-wise

within a tolerance level (r) also match at the next point. Here, r = 20% of

the standard deviations of X(τ ), and m = 2. (Ref.6)

The third step: Summation of each MSE(τ ) across different time scales (τ)

60 MSE Area = MES (t ) (c) t =1
