You should know that my expectations are indeed high for you; however, you should also know I work diligently on my end to give you the tools to reach those expectations.

Course Description : This course will take an in-depth, analytical approach to both fiction and non-fiction American literature. Along with analytical reading, students will be expected to produce high level essays that are both well-argued and well-structured.

Materials:  Prentice Hall Literature: The American Experience, Core novels (received from school when needed)  Notebook with dividers for in-class lecture notes, hand-outs, and assignments  Pencil, pen, highlighter – multiples of each are highly recommended  Access to computer, Flash drive, printer paper, etc. for of out-of-class formal written assignments  Post-it notes – annotation is a key skill in this and other courses  Recommended: College level Dictionary and Thesaurus

Grades: Grades are based on a standard scale: 100-90% - A 69-60% - D 89-80% - B Below 60%- Failure of course 79-70% - C –yes, 59.9% is below 60% Grades II:  Three basic categories: Essays/Projects: ______, Exams: ______, Classwork/homework: ______ Grades will reflect knowledge and skill Assignments:  Due dates will be announced in class as well as written on the board.  If a student is absent, it is his or her responsibility to acquire missed assignments and notes.  Handouts (if any were given) may be found on the back wall in folders.  On time assignments: ______ Late/Absent assignments: ______Independent Reading:  You will be required to read 350 pages per quarter/ 700 pages per semester.  Reading must be at or above grade level. No core novels accepted. Not sure? Check.  There will be a written assignment each quarter based on outside reading. Essays & Other Projects:  Students will be asked to compose four to six essays this semester to both reinforce skills that are discussed in class and prepare students for college placement tests. Whenever an essay is required to be typed, I will only accept the hardcopy. I will not allow students to hand me a disk or flash drive, nor will I accept emailed copies. *Please note that if I do not receive a hard copy of the assignment on the day that it is due, it will be late.*  Essays/typed assignments must be submitted to turnitin.com to be considered complete. Good to know:  All homework is due at the ______. Any work turned in more than ______minute after the bell rings will lose ______%. Every day it is late, the assignment will lose an additional 10% until it reaches ______%.  I accept late work within the same quarter of its due date, but it is not recommended as it will have a negative impact on your ability to keep up with skills being learned and your grade.

Quizzes & Tests:  Students will have a vocabulary quiz every Friday.  If a pop quiz is given, it will cover either reading homework or previous class discussion. Pop quizzes cannot be made up if a student is absent or tardy.  Scheduled tests must be made up within one week if the absence is excused. It is the student’s responsibility to come before or after school to make up the test and remind the instructor.

Simple Rules to Follow:

 Please use common sense: be respectful, on time, and aware of your responsibilities. o Do not physically or verbally assault any person or his or her property  School rules of conduct are enforced in this classroom – refer to your student handbook Consequences:  If you break a rule, you will be given one warning.  Breaking a rule twice will result in a detention or loss of points for the day.  If a rule is broken again, or if a first time offense is severe, it will result in serious disciplinary action.
