Dear Students s6

Dear Students,

The University of Texas Natural Science Center is opening a new wing that looks at the historical components of cell biology. The museum is aiming for an exhibit that will help visitors to the museum understand cell theory. Museums often use creative ways to educate and for this exhibit they would like to use a timeline to explain cell theory. The museum would like to hire your team of cell biologists, to design the timeline.

From your timeline, visitors to the museum will learn about cell theory, the history of the microscope and scientists that contributed to cell theory. They will also learn about numerous experiments leading to the rejection of spontaneous generation, (an idea that had been accepted by most people, including scientists, for over 200 years.)

Aside from understanding the actual components of cell theory itself, visitors should see that scientific theories are not generated overnight, but require thorough testing, research, and review. Theories are also based upon a body of knowledge that has been compiled by many individuals, not just the work of one.

In order to complete the time line your team will need to choose 7 -10 scientists from the packet you are about receive, to highlight their contribution to cell theory. Your team’s timeline will need to be colorful, and easy to read. The timeline must include:

 a picture of the scientist

 a hand drawn image representing the contribution of the scientist

 statement in the teams own words of how the scientist contributed to cell theory.

In addition, the completed timeline needs to include the parts of cell theory.

We appreciate your assistance in researching and developing our new exhibit and look forward to receiving your timeline. We look forward to seeing what you create!

Thank you,

Dr. Robert Hooke, Museum Curator

Pre AP: You need to make two thought bubbles for 3 scientists (total of 6) that will answer the following question. How would our lives be different if the scientists you researched had never existed? Any group with one Pre AP student will need to complete this piece

Staple this letter and rubric to the timeline. Team Member’s Names:______Period:_____
