ASSURANCE OF ATTENDANCE: Participants must commit to full attendance on all days of a workshop.

COST: Free! PDPS: Educators who successfully complete requirements from both days will receive 15 PDPS. PRE-REQUISITES: Some knowledge of the WIDA Standards Framework: WIDA 101 or completion of WIDA online modules below. MATERIALS  A question or a problem of practice around the teaching of ELs. NEEDED:  A laptop to record your work.  Sample Lessons: Bring a sample lesson that you’ve already taught and are looking to revise, or a lesson you are planning to teach in the future. You’ll be sharing your lesson with 5-7 other educators.  Student Data: Bring your ACCESS Teacher Report or the Student Roster Report for students you work with. If you can’t bring either, bring or be aware of your EL students’ ELD levels.

AUDIENCE: Educators who work with English learners and also teach math, English language specialists, coaches, administrators, curriculum developers, and support staff who are already familiar with the WIDA English Language Development Standards (if you are not, you can watch the online modules listed below.)

DESCRIPTION: This interactive two-day workshop offers teachers of English Learners time to delve into combining English Language Development Standards and Mathematical Practices. In collaborative groups of educators, we will develop a common understanding of academic language in a mathematics environment. After developing a common understanding of language expectations, we will explore strategies and supports that foster a language rich environment. Through hands-on experimentation and analysis of language embedded within the content and practices, participants will have a deeper understanding of how to engage language learners of a variety of proficiency levels. The workshop will conclude with participants applying the process to one of their lessons.

OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:  Build on students’ assets and strengths in the mathematics classroom  Create a common understanding of Academic Language and proficiency levels  Have a deeper understanding of the Mathematical Practices  Engage in instructional strategies that support creating language rich environments for students to create meaning in the math classroom  Apply targeted supports for a variety of proficiency levels

LUNCH: You will have a 45 minute lunch break. Lunch is not provided. Please bring a lunch or check the local area ahead of time to see if there are any lunch vendors nearby.

INCLEMENT WEATHER POLICY: In the event of inclement weather our policy is as follows: If the school district in which this workshop is being held is CLOSED then the workshop will be rescheduled, we will not be cancelling or rescheduling if other school districts are closed.
