Memo to: Managers of businesses, residents and property owners of downtown Hopkinton From: Richard Flannery, Hopkinton Police Chief Andy Deschenes, Boston Marathon Start Coordinator Dorothy Ferriter-Wallace, Hopkinton Marathon Committee, Chairman Date: Monday, March 29, 2010 Re: Marathon Monday, April 19th, 2010

“It All Starts Here!” In a few short weeks the town of Hopkinton will host 26,000 runners from around the world as they gather to participate in the 114th B.A.A. Boston Marathon. Each runner will cross the start line of the Boston Marathon on their own journey to Boston. There are thousands of individual triumphs and accomplishments that have earned them the right to be part of this April tradition and we congratulate all the runners!

For the past year our team including public safety personnel, the Hopkinton Marathon Committee, Hopkinton Selectmen’s Office and the Boston Athletic Association, has been working to develop a race day program that will assure an efficient and safe start for the 2010 Boston Marathon.

Roads in Hopkinton will close at 7:30 am.

The race day program this year is relatively unchanged from last year. The official start time is 10:00 a.m.

The Athletes’ Village will be located behind the High School and Middle School. This gives runners more room to rest and relax before they are called to the starting line.

There will be two wave starts, Wave One at 10am and Wave Two at 10:30 a.m. There will be approximately 13,000 runners in each wave. All runners will be directed down Grove Street from the Athletes’ Village to Main Street. All corrals, for each wave, will be on Main Street between the start line and the eastern side of the entrance to the Police station. There will be NO corrals on Grove Street, however, the entire distance of Grove Street between the Middle School and Colella’s will be barricaded to keep runners from entering private property (Access to property on Grove Street will be restricted due to fencing.) Runners will be released from the Athletes’ Village in a managed and staggered procedure. Water and additional port-o-johns will be staged in Colella’s parking lot to service runners moving into corrals on Main Street. The number of port-o-johns in Hopkinton has been increased for 2010 by one third to 788 total units in order to provide better access for all runners.

The B.A.A. has retained the services of a company to be dispatched to handle any isolated sanitation issues. This service will be available on Monday and Tuesday afternoon. Please call the Command Post (508-497-2316) to report problems that need to be addressed. Command Post is operational from Friday, April 16th through Monday, April 19th at 1pm. Please direct all calls, after 1pm on Monday, to the Hopkinton Police Department.

An “Ambassador Program” will be in place to assist in getting the runners from the Athletes Village to their corrals more efficiently.
