SUMMARY: “The diocesan catechetical office is ‘the means by which the Bishop as head of the community and teacher of doctrine utilizes to direct and moderate all the catechetical activities of the diocese”. (NDC, p.250)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: includes the following. Other duties may be assigned. To work with all diocesan ministries to further the diocesan mission of evangelization, specifically working closely and collaboratively with the Chancellor, the Offices of Evangelization, Respect/Family Life, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Pastoral Leadership, Liturgy and Formation for Ministry. To analyze the catechetical needs of the Diocese. To develop Diocesan policies in consultation with others responsible for the catechetical mission of the Diocese. To assist parishes/PCAs with the following: o Offering research and recommendations on catechetical models for all ages o Provide guidelines for selection of catechetical textbooks, materials and other resources o Provide access to catechetical resources including textbooks, instructional aids, digital resources, that are in conformity with the Catechism of the Catholic Church o Provide assistance in the evaluation of parish catechetical programs o Provide training in the use of digital tools and digital catechesis o Provide theologically and academically sound programs of preparation for parish catechetical leaders o Develop processes for the recruitment, approval, orientation, ongoing formation, certification and evaluation of catechetical leaders and catechists o Establish and monitor norms for accreditation and certification of parish catechetical leaders and catechists o Provide guidance and resources to meet the catechetical needs of persons with special needs o Offer a sounding board on catechetical matters o Keep catechetical leaders informed of important Church documents and recommendations pertaining to catechesis Supervise Associate Directors and staff of the Office of Faith Formation Prepare budget and strategic plan for the office Participate in meetings with the New York State Diocesan Directors of Religious Education
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: A Master’s Degree or its equivalent in Religious Studies, Religious Education, Theology or a related field preferred. Experience as a catechetical leader on a parish, regional or diocesan level.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: The diocesan director of faith formation “should be an exemplary Catholic with advanced academic training in theology, catechesis or a related field; proven experience in parish catechesis; excellent communication and leadership skills; and the ability to collaborate effectively.” (NDC p 252). In addition this person should have a working knowledge of computer programs and technology, especially as it relates to catechesis.
