Further Particulars for Lecturer in Operational Research

Applications are invited for the post of Lecturer in Operational Research in the Department of Mathematical Sciences. The following information is provided for applicants.

 The University of Southampton is a leading UK teaching and research institution with a global reputation for leading-edge research and scholarship. It is one of the UK's top 10 research universities, offering first-rate opportunities for study and research across a wide range of subjects.

 Mathematical Sciences offers superb facilities for research and education, and currently has 49 permanent academic members of staff (13 Professors, 16 Readers/Senior Lecturers/Associate Professors and 19 Lecturers, 2 Teaching Fellows) plus 11 research staff and an Industrial Liaison Officer, together with technical and clerical support staff. The School conducts research across a broad range of areas of mathematics and consists of four academic groups: Operational Research, Statistics, Pure Mathematics and Applied Mathematics. The 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) rated 100% of research activity in Mathematical Sciences as of internationally excellent or world-leading quality.

 The successful candidate will be able to undertake teaching in a variety of Operational Research-related topics. Teaching duties will also involve support for a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

 MSc project supervision forms an important component of the teaching duties. This includes supervision of projects with external sponsors that are set up by an industrial liaison officer. These MSc projects sometimes lead to follow-up work in the form of research contracts and consultancy.

 Candidates with a research background in any area of Operational Research are encouraged to apply. Applications from candidates whose research career is in its early stages are welcome. The Operational Research Group currently has research interests in combinatorial optimization, mathematical programming, simulation, stochastic modelling, non-linear optimization, production and transport scheduling, revenue management and healthcare modelling. PhD students work in several of these areas.

 The Operational Research (OR) group forms part of the research centre CORMSIS (Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems). This is the largest OR/MS/IS groups in the UK, spanning the Academic Units of Mathematical Sciences and Business and other interested colleagues. It covers the whole spectrum of current OR/MS/IS activity from theoretical mathematical developments to problem structuring and knowledge management. CORMSIS runs a regular seminar series which has speakers in all of the main research areas in OR/MS/IS. It also has a visitor programme that provides funding for visitors so that new collaborations can be established, and new techniques learned from visitors. For more details see http://www.southampton.ac.uk/cormsis/

 The OR Group uses its strong mathematical base to develop academic and industrial research links. Collaborative research takes place with other universities in the UK and overseas, with other academic disciplines such as Business and Engineering, and with industry. Some of the Group's work is supported by a variety of EPSRC and EU grants and industrial sponsorship.

 Duties, as determined by the Head of the Department, will include teaching on both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, undertaking the necessary accompanying assessment and administrative duties, and contributing to the efficient management and administration of the Department of Mathematical Sciences.

 The successful candidate will be expected to take up the post on 1 st September 2015 or as soon as possible thereafter.

 The appointment will be made on the basis of the University's standard terms and conditions, with initial salary on the Lecturer ERE/5 scale within the range £36,309 to £45,954 per annum.

 Interviews are expected to be held in May or June 2015

1  As part of the interview process, candidates will be invited to give a research presentation.
