HAROLD 13 EARL PEARSON, JR., OF LAURENS, FOR HIS SERVICE IN 14 THE MERCHANT MARINE DURING THE SECOND WORLD 15 WAR, AND TO ACKNOWLEDGE HIM PUBLICLY AS AN 16 AMERICAN HERO. 17 18 Whereas, Harold Earl Pearson, Jr., of Laurens, born May 6, 1922, 19 to H.E. and Doris Pearson, was graduated from Laurens High 20 School and later pursued two years of further education at 21 Clemson University; and 22 23 Whereas, as a young man, Mr. Pearson answered the call of his 24 country to serve in the United States Naval Reserve Merchant 25 Marine during World War II; and 26 27 Whereas, a true American hero, he fought in the Atlantic, Pacific, 28 and Mediterranean Theatres, in this last theatre participating in the 29 invasion of France. At one point, although he was ordered to 30 abandon ship, this courageous engineer remained onboard and 31 saved the ship, thus preserving also the lives of all the crew 32 members it supported. In addition, he was credited with assisting 33 in the saving of two other ships; and 34 35 Whereas, following his military service, Mr. Pearson went into 36 business for himself, becoming the owner of two hosiery mills and 37 retiring from that endeavor after many successful years of 38 production; and 39 40 Whereas, the husband of Jean Pearson, whom he married almost a 41 decade ago after the passing of his first wife, Edith Nye Pearson,
[3256] 2 1 he is family patriarch to a son, two daughters, and several 2 grandchildren; and 3 4 Whereas, his loyalty and devotion to his family, his friends, his 5 work, and his country are admired by all who know him and have 6 established him as a pillar of the Laurens community. On behalf of 7 the citizens of the Palmetto State, the House of Representatives is 8 pleased to honor this son of South Carolina, a man of integrity and 9 courage, Harold Earl Pearson, Jr. Now, therefore, 10 11 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives: 12 13 That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives, 14 by this resolution, express the grateful thanks of the people of the 15 State of South Carolina to Mr. Harold Earl Pearson, Jr., of 16 Laurens, for his service in the Merchant Marine during the Second 17 World War, and acknowledge him publicly as an American hero. 18 19 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 20 Mr. Pearson. 21 XX 22
