NO Shooting Or Horsing Around Before Games Or During Dead Ball

Officials duties:

NO shooting or horsing around before games or during dead ball.

Make sure scorers and timers are in place well before game, so you can start the game on time. The coaches and scorers aren't worried about the time, but you as the official must be aware.

Points of emphasis:

1. During dead balls (substitutes, time outs, etc.) ONE official should be available for the score table and the other ready where the ball is to be put in play. If there is a need for a discussion with your partner, do it quickly and move to your positions. During quarter and half time breaks collect your thoughts on the game, have a discussion with partner if there is anything out of the ordinary and move to your starting position.

The total game takes about 80 minutes. The live ball time (4 X 8 min.) 32minutes. Quarter breaks 3 minutes Half time 5 minutes

That leaves 40 minutes of time that you as an official control. This is where you manage the game efficiently (time outs, subs, and shooting fouls.)

2. Communication with players: tell them hands off or get out of the key, but don't be telling them all day, one warning is enough. 3. Be polite to coaches, and during dead balls without wasting time; listen to their concern, then a polite short yes, I see , or I'll watch that, then get moving. Remember if you stop too long to have a discussion with one coach, the other one will want equal time.

OFFICIALS should have with them in their bag a notepad to write down the comments from the mentor/evaluator. Then each week the progress can be observed by the official and the mentor/evaluator, (as there will be different ones each week.)

Officials must show excitement and interest in being there. Coaches can pick out quickly the ones that are just going through the motions. Hustle, hustle, hustle.

Lastly, be FIRM, but FRIENDLY.
