People credited with this unit standard are able to: describe considerations for the cartage of livestock by road; describe the requirements of the Code of Animal Welfare (CAW); demonstrate knowledge of the Industry Code of Practice for Minimisation of Stock Effluent Spillage from Trucks on Roads; demonstrate knowledge of facilities for stock available en route to drivers carrying stock; and demonstrate knowledge of factors affecting despatch of livestock transportation vehicles. entry information: Open. accreditation option: Evaluation of documentation and visit by NZQA and industry. moderation option: A centrally established and directed national moderation system has been set up by the NZ Motor Industry Training Organisation (Incorporated). special notes: 1 This unit standard does not cover the criteria for the cartage of deer.

3 Definitions The Code is The Industry Code of Practice for the Minimisation of Stock Effluent Spillage from Trucks on Roads. The Code of Animal Welfare (CAW) is The Code of Recommendations and Minimum Standards for the Welfare of Animals Transported within New Zealand (Code of Animal Welfare 15). Emergencies may include but are not limited to ill- health of animal(s), delay in travel, stock transporter involved in crash. Organisational requirements include any legal requirements, standards, codes of practice, organisational and/or site requirements, industry best practices, and manufacturers’ instructions. These must be available to candidates, providers, and assessors.

Elements and Performance Criteria element 1

Describe considerations for the cartage of livestock by road. performance criteria

1.1 The description explains the impact of age, weight, and size of animals on the load for one vehicle or combination vehicle.

Range: two different types of animal, two different ages of animals.

1.2 The description includes methods of handling livestock that ensure safe loading, avoid stress to the animals, and involve segregation.

Range: two different types of animal, two different ages of animals.

1.3 The description identifies amounts of time required for loading different stock.

Range: two different types of animal, two different ages of animals, two different sizes of stock crate.

1.4 The description identifies three different causes of delay when loading animals. element 2

Describe the requirements of the Code of Animal Welfare (CAW). performance criteria

2.1 Requirements for loading facilities and ramps are described in terms of the CAW.

2.2 The description includes the requirements of the CAW for segregation of stock in transit.

Range: minimum of three different animal types.

2.3 The description includes maximum times permitted by the CAW for stock to be transported without water, without food, and exceptions to these requirements.

2.4 The description includes legal and organisational requirements to be followed when an emergency occurs while stock are en route.

2.5 The description identifies documentation required by law and the CAW to be carried by drivers.

2.6 Management support actions for drivers who refuse to carry unfit stock are described in terms of the requirements of the CAW and organisational requirements. element 3

Demonstrate knowledge of the Industry Code of Practice for Minimisation of Stock Effluent Spillage from Trucks on Roads. performance criteria

3.1 The three basic principles of the Code are stated as they apply to all parties.

3.2 The seven responsibilities of livestock carriers are explained in terms of the Code.

3.3 The responsibilities of farmers, meat-works, and stock agents are explained in terms of standing stock, adequate advance notification by all parties, and acceptance of effluent from holding tanks. element 4

4.1 Lay-bys and other places where stock may be transferred between vehicles are identified within a 100 km radius of the despatch office.

4.2 Locations where animals may be unloaded in case of stress or emergency are identified within a 100km radius of the despatch office.

4.3 Locations where effluent from truck holding tanks may be dumped are identified within a 100km radius of the despatch office.

Demonstrate knowledge of factors affecting despatch of livestock transportation vehicles. performance criteria

5.1 The issues to be identified when an order to transport stock is placed are described in terms of site access and on-farm facilities, details of the load, destination, and timeframe.

5.2 Time required for cleaning livestock crates after delivery of load is identified in relation to operational requirements.

5.3 The description includes the requirements of inter-island ferry operators for carriage of livestock vehicles.
