1 South Carolina General Assembly 2 119th Session, 2011-2012 3 4 S. 1156 5 6 STATUS INFORMATION 7 8 Senate Resolution 9 Sponsors: Senator Scott 10 Document Path: l:\council\bills\rm\1374htc12.docx 11 Companion/Similar bill(s): 4694 12 13 Introduced in the Senate on January 31, 2012 14 Adopted by the Senate on January 31, 2012 15 16 Summary: AMIkids 17 18 19 HISTORY OF LEGISLATIVE ACTIONS 20 21 Date Body Action Description with journal page number 22 1/31/2012 Senate Introduced and adopted 23 24 25 VERSIONS OF THIS BILL 26 27 1/31/2012 28 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A SENATE RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND AMIKIDS FOR GUIDING 12 TROUBLED YOUTH INTO POSITIVE, PRODUCTIVE 13 ALTERNATIVES TO PAST BEHAVIOR AND ENABLING 14 THEM TO BECOME SUCCESSFUL CITIZENS OF THIS 15 GREAT STATE. 16 17 Whereas, few things afford keener pleasure to the South Carolina 18 Senate than recognizing the selfless labors of those who succor this 19 great State’s most precious resource, its children; and 20 21 Whereas, founded in 1969 by Robert Rosoff and Judge Frank 22 Orlando in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and introduced to the Palmetto 23 State in 1984, AMIkids has proved itself a valuable ally in the 24 great task of nurturing South Carolina’s atrisk youth; and 25 26 Whereas, from the beginning, AMIkids’ mission has been to 27 provide troubled youth with proactive alternatives to institutional 28 incarceration by offering them a second chance, a new direction, 29 and caring, guiding hands within a communitybased setting; and 30 31 Whereas, nationally, AMIkids has served and helped transform the 32 lives of more than 105,000 youth, twenty thousand of them in the 33 Palmetto State; and 34 35 Whereas, twentyeight years ago, AMIkids arrived in South 36 Carolina and began operations in Beaufort, spawning the 37 organization’s present seven marine/wilderness programs, all 38 successful; and 39 40 Whereas, the organization maintains a proactive relationship with 41 the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and the South 42 Carolina General Assembly and credits these two entities with the
[1156] 2 1 foresight that brought AMIkids to this State. Their joint vision has 2 resulted in changing the lives of our troubled youth while 3 maintaining the safety and security of South Carolina’s citizens 4 with some of the lowest recidivism rates in the United States. Such 5 success saves this State millions of dollars in institutional costs; 6 and 7 8 Whereas, young people impacted by AMIkids are able to work 9 their way back into a world of opportunity. AMIkids graduates 10 have gone on to earn high school and college diplomas, start small 11 businesses, find gainful employment, enlist in the military, and 12 serve as loving and nurturing parents; and 13 14 Whereas, holding fast to its mission, AMIkids continues to assist 15 youth in “separating a troubled past from a bright future”; and 16 17 Whereas, cognizant of the invaluable contributions and 18 achievements of AMIkids over the past three decades, the South 19 Carolina Senate is pleased to recognize this worthy organization 20 for providing love, practical assistance, and hope for the future to 21 thousands of the Palmetto State’s atrisk young people. Now, 22 therefore, 23 24 Be it resolved by the Senate: 25 26 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 27 recognize and commend AMIkids for guiding troubled youth into 28 positive, productive alternatives to past behavior and enabling 29 them to become successful citizens of this great State. 30 31 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be provided to 32 AMIkids. 33 XX 34
