Dear Parent/s, We are very excited to announce that there will be a four day science camp for Kingfisher's fifth grade students this October 15th - October 18th, at the Goddard Youth Camp near Sulphur, Oklahoma. The Goddard Youth Camp is one of the few National Educational Landmarks in the United States. It is an excellent camp facility set up especially for the environmental science education of our youth. For the last twenty years we have been able to offer this opportunity to our students and it has been a great success. There has been nothing but positive feedback from both parents and students, and we are excited to continue this unique educational experience. The cost of the camp is $185 which includes all meals, transportation, and lodging for the full four days. Attached is a sheet with payment options. Please print the necessary forms, check the plan that applies to you, and return the completed form with the $65 deposit to Kingfisher Middle School no later than May 21st. We are needing some parent volunteers to be camp counselors. If you would be interested and could be available for these days, please mark the appropriate space on the form and we will contact you with more information.

Sincerely,

Misty Blundell George Terrell Camp Directors

Dear Parent/Guardian, Your child has probably already told you about the opportunity of spending wholesome, educational and fun-filled days at Camp Goddard. We feel the outdoors education program is an integral and valuable part of our school program. This year the camp will be October 15th through October 18th. Camp Goddard is located six miles south of Sulphur, Oklahoma, on the shores of "Lake of the Arbuckles". Your child will receive an excellent educational program, conducted in a safe, healthful place and under close, skillful supervision. To acquaint you more fully with the program, the following questions asked most frequently by interested parents are answered.

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM:

1. To develop an awareness and appreciation of the total environment.

2. To develop an appreciation for the importance of conserving our natural resources.

3. To develop an appreciation for and respect of our fellow classmates.

4. To develop an understanding that all subject areas are related and exist as separate subjects for the ease of organization.

5. To give the child a wholesome experience they will long remember.

Camp Goddard is actually a school-out-of-doors. Activities are designed to supplement and enhance classroom learning. The students have a chance to put into practice some of the things they have learned in the classroom. It is our earnest desire that your child will return home a healthier, wiser, happier, more observant, and more self-reliant person because of his camp experience.

HOW MUCH WILL IT COST:

1. A fee of $185 per child is charged. This fee covers the week's lodging, meals, and insurance for the week of camp.

It is hoped that every child attending camp has an opportunity to earn all or part of the camp fee. This week of camp can be a more meaningful experience if your child has earned and saved enough money to pay his own way. You can cooperate by thinking of ways your child can earn the fee through performances of household or other chores.

IS THE CAMP SUPERVISED? BY ALL MEANS! Your child will be under close, competent supervision by specially trained teachers 24 hours a day. You need have no fears on this score.

WHAT ABOUT MY CHILD'S PHYSICAL CARE? The cabins at Camp Goddard are permanent, year-round structures with adequate heating and comfortable facilities. Food is plentiful and wholesome and prepared by competent, experienced persons. Diets have been carefully planned. Counselors will rigidly enforce observance of safety standards. If your child has some special health problem such as allergies, diet, special medicines, sleep-walking, or bed-wetting, etc., please let us know. We will arrange for special treatment and see that your child is not embarrassed by his problem, whatever it may be.

WHAT IS THE CAMP ADDRESS? CAMP GODDARD, 2940 Goddard Youth Camp Road, Sulphur, OK 73086 To keep your camper happy and contented during his absence from home the following has proven helpful. Mail him a cheerful, encouraging letter early in the week. "Mail Time" is an important time of the day. Be sure your letters are cheery and do not include gloomy items such as you "miss him and wish he were home. Remember, children can worry just as acutely as adults.

DOES THE CAMP HAVE A TELEPHONE? Yes, the camp number is 580-993-3333. This telephone is for business and emergency calls only. Please do not call your child. The camp staff will be glad to deliver any necessary messages. If you have a special situation, please talk to us about it.

MAY PARENTS VISIT THE CAMP? We feel that it is wise for the parent not to visit the camp while his child is there. Such a visit can be very disturbing to the child as well as embarrassing. Children think of camp as an independent experience in which they are on their own. A visit from their parents can spoil this feeling of self- reliance.

WHAT ABOUT ILLNESS OR AN EMERGENCY? "FIRST, NOTIFY THE PARENT!" is the policy. If this is impossible the child would be taken to a clinic.

WHAT ABOUT TRANSPORTATION? Transportation will be provided to and from camp.

ARE ALL PUPILS REOUIRED TO ATTEND THE CAMP? No, your child is not required to attend camp. It is our sincerest desire that all students do attend the camp. This experience may be one of the best your child will have the opportunity to receive, both academically and socially. If for some reason, however, you do not feel it is best for your child to attend, this will be left to your discretion. If your child does not attend Camp Goddard, they will attend regular classes at school.

WHAT CLOTHING AND EOUIPMENT ARE NEEDED? There is no necessity for a camper to spend extra money for special camp clothing or equipment. Old clothes and shoes will be more comfortable and practical than new ones. Each person will be allowed to take one bedroll and one suitcase. To emphasize the quantity of materials to be taken, follow this rule of thumb, " IF YOU CAN'T CARRY IT ---- DON'T TAKE IT!"

As the time draws nearer to camp, other details will be forwarded to you. If you have further questions, please contact the following camp instructor. Misty Blundell George Terrell ------375-6607
