GRADING TOPICS/CONCEPTS PERIOD TIME CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES First Draft of 1st Short Story 1 week Students will prepare a first draft of a short story for the class to 1 review/critique. Students will work on the draft in and out of class. Review/Critique Short Stories of Class 1 week Students will read and evaluate peer writing based on a pre-set 1 criteria. Daily critiques will be conducted until each story is reviewed. Improvement options are discussed. Revision of 1st Short Story is Completed 1 week Students will revise their first story for improvement based on class evaluations and recommendations. Class will read revisions 1 and discuss what improved and what revisions did not benefit the writing. First Draft of 2nd Short Story 1 week Students will prepare a first draft of a new short story for the class to review/critique. Students will work on the draft in and out of 1 class. Variants will be assigned based on the first short story assignment (point of view, setting, characterization, genres, etc. will be changed to make students experiment in new directions). Review/Critique Short Stories of Class 1 week Students will read and evaluate peer writing based on a pre-set 1 criteria. Daily critiques will be conducted until each story is reviewed. Improvement options are discussed. Revision of 2nd Short Story 1 week Students will revise their second story for improvement based on class evaluations and recommendations. Class will read revisions 1 and discuss what improved and what revisions did not benefit the writing. First Draft of Poem 3 days Students will prepare a poem for the class to review/critique. 2 Students will work on the draft in and out of class. The first poem will have no limitations for form. Review/Critique Poems of Class 2 days Students will read and evaluate peer writing based on a pre-set 2 criteria. Daily critiques will be conducted until each poem is reviewed. Improvement options are discussed. Revision of 1st Poem is Completed 2 5 days Students will revise their first poem for improvement based on class evaluations and recommendations. Class will read revisions and discuss what improved and what revisions did not benefit the 1 writing. First Draft of 2nd Poem 5 days Students will prepare a poem for the class to review/critique. Students will work on the draft in and out of class. This poem will 2 require the use of a choice of forms (sonnet, triplet, sestina, etc.), plus a set of optional techniques to include (onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, etc.). Review/Critique Poems of Class 2 days Students will read and evaluate peer writing based on a pre-set 2 criteria. Daily critiques will be conducted until each poem is reviewed. Improvement options are discussed. Revision of 2nd Poem is Completed 3 days Students will revise their first poem for improvement based on class evaluations and recommendations. Class will read revisions 2 and discuss what improved and what revisions did not benefit the writing. First Draft of 3rd Poem 3 days Students will prepare a poem for the class to review/critique. Students will work on the draft in and out of class. The first poem will have no limitations for form. This poem will require the use 2 of a choice of forms (sonnet, triplet, sestina, etc.), plus a set of optional techniques to include (onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration, etc.) different from the previous poem. Class will read revisions 2 and discuss what improved and what revisions did not benefit the writing. First Draft of Drama 2 weeks Students will prepare a dramatic writing for the class to review/critique. Students will work on the draft in and out of class. The drama should develop after reading several one act plays. The 3 students will be able to write two, one act plays, or one multiple act play. The focus of the first draft will be on writing enough stage directions to tell the story. Review/Critique of Dramas of Class 1 week Students will read and evaluate peer writing based on a pre-set 3 criteria. Daily critiques will be conducted until each drama is reviewed. Improvement options are discussed. Revision of Drama is Completed 3 1 week Students will complete a revision of their drama. The revision should include improvements from previous draft; the new version 2 will include improvements in dialogue to take the place of some of the stage directions. Review/Critique of Dramas of Class 1 week Students will read and evaluate peer writing in the new revision. 3 Daily critiques will be conducted until each drama is reviewed. Improvement options are discussed. Final Draft of Drama 1 week Students will complete their dramatic writing. The revision should 3 show improvement and an understanding of dramatic techniques and how they are applied in writing.
