Reading Logs Are Worth 5 Points Per Day (At Least 20 Days) for a Total of 100 Points For

Reading logs must be completed after school hours, therefore, you may not count time spent reading at school for the reading log. Reading Logs will be assigned on the first day of the month and are due on the last day of the month. If the last day of the month falls on weekends or holidays, then the assignment will be due on the day we return.

Reading Logs are worth 5 points per day (at least 20 days) for a total of 100 points for the entire month. One point for the title, one point for the number of pages read, one point for parent signature, and two points for a clear, correct, and complete three to five sentence summary of the story. Summaries should consider the following questions: Who? What? When? Where? and Why? A good summary should also begin with the words “This chapter was about”, If you choose to read every day, five bonus points will be awarded for each extra day you read.

Reading Logs WILL NOT be accepted without a parent signature. You will not receive credit for any days that do not have parent signatures. Please create a quiet, cozy space in your home to read each night and set a timer so you will know how long you have read. You should take home a chapter book each night and return it to school each day. When you finish a book, you must take an AR test. If you have an iPad or other electronic device, you may check out http://www.tbcjr.com/ to read books for your reading log. The username is VenusES and the password is login. Some books even have audio versions!

You will be required to have 15 accelerated reader points by March 6th and maintain an average of 85% or above. You will need approximately 2 AR points per week to obtain this goal. Please do not wait until the end of the nine weeks to try to get your points. Be responsible and get your points each week. You will receive two grades per semester for AR points. One grade will be for your AR percentage and the other will be percentage of points you earned toward your goal. Your parents can sign up to receive an email each time you take a test so they can monitor your progress here: https://hosted24.renlearn.com/106276/HomeConnect/. You may use your AR username and password to login.

If you exceed your goal, the extra points will be counted as bonus points. If you are in the top 15 point earners for fourth grade for the year and have above 85% average, you will get to go on a special field trip at the end of the year. It is your responsibility to take an AR test during morning arrivals, study hall, or free time during class.

It is important that you choose books that you are interested in that are on your level. If you choose books that are too easy, they will not challenge you. If you choose books that are too hard, then your AR percentage will drop. It is a good idea to find a series that you enjoy and read the books in that series. You must have a chapter book at all times. You should take it home to read for your reading log and return it to school every day to read if you have free time in class. We are participating in the Book It! program through Pizza Hut this year. You will receive a certificate for a free personal pan pizza when you return your completed reading log on the date it is due.
