Request For Applications

Malcolm Feist Cardiovascular Research Fellowships

Background: A major goal of The Center for Cardiovascular Diseases and Sciences (CCDS) is to promote cardiovascular research, education, and patient care.

Dedicated research time and support are vital for the development of young cardiovascular researchers and for the growth of the CCDS. Early development and support of basic scientists and clinicians will allow for the recruitment of young, promising cardiovascular researchers into the Center as junior faculty.

General Program Information: The Malcolm Feist Cardiovascular Fellowship program will fund a maximum of 6-8 fellows per fiscal year. Preference is given to applicants with the potential to be eligible for a K99, AHA Scientist Development Grant, or similar extramural funding opportunity. Applicants cannot submit the same application for consideration to two or more different intramural funding mechanisms at the same time. If an original application is not funded, applicants may submit up to two revisions of that application. No further revised versions of that application will be reviewed for support by any of the funding mechanisms. A new application with a new title and meaningful changes in substance must be prepared. Revised applications must include a clearly marked introduction indicating the changes that have been made in response to the reviewers' critiques. Applications that do not include such an introduction will be returned to the applicant without consideration. Research projects involving animals or human subjects must be approved by the IACUC or IRB respectively prior to submission of the grant application. A copy of the approved IACUC or IRB protocol (and informed consent form) should accompany the application.

Qualifications: Both basic science post-doctoral fellows and resident/clinical fellows will be allowed to submit a fellowship proposal to the CCDS. Applicants with more than 5 years of postdoctoral research experience at any institution are NOT ELIGIBLE to submit an application for a Malcolm Feist Research Fellowship. International scientists are welcome to submit fellowship applications. However, preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated proficiency in English (verbal and written). International applicants may be required to present an acceptable score on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language, minimum score = 85) or the IELTS (International English Language Testing Service, minimum acceptable score = 6.5) test.

Funding Period: The proposed research and training plan may cover a period of 1, 2 or 3 years. Preference will be given to applicants seeking more than one year of research training. The initial application should specify the total length of the project, with corresponding budgets for each project year, as well as a cumulative budget. The duration of funding should reflect the amount of work proposed. For example, applicants proposing three-year projects should prepare a research plan reflecting three years of work. Fellowships are funded in 1-year increments. The Board can renew a CCDS Fellowship twice, for a total funding period of 3 years. Continued funding by the Board in years 02 and 03 is contingent upon the fellow’s productivity and progress on the project.

2  Budget: The total budget for the Fellowship will not exceed $60,000 per year. The amount budgeted for the fellow’s salary cannot exceed the amount dictated by institutional policy. The remaining funds can be dedicated for research supplies, travel, etc. Technical support and equipment purchases are not allowed. The initial application should include a budget for each project year of proposed support as well as a cumulative budget. Fellowship support can be secured for up to 3 years, contingent upon research progress and productivity. The cumulative budget cannot exceed $180,000 ($60,000 per year). Funds will be dispersed for project start dates of January 1 or July 1. Unused funds must be returned to the Center at the end of the project.

Reporting: A final report is due to the Board no later than 1 month after the end of the project.

A completed and signed Intramural Routing Sheet (Lite Green Sheet) for Intramural Applications must be submitted with the application. The Intramural Routing Sheet form is located on Office of Sponsored Programs website: http://lsuhscshreveport.edu/Research/officeofresearch/intramuralgrants/index

Submission Instructions: Applications will be accepted twice a year (approximately March and October) for funding to begin on July 1st or January 1st. Scan and include the completed and signed Intramural Routing Sheet (Lite Green Sheet) with the intramural application. The completed intramural application package will be emailed in PDF format to the Office for Sponsored Programs ([email protected]) and the CCDS ([email protected]) by 5PM on March 23, 2018.

NOTE: OSPTT is no longer requiring the original signature documents (Intramural Routing Sheet and application signature page) be delivered prior to grant submission. These signed documents must be included in the scanned application package. Applications submitted without these documents and/or signatures will be rejected for submission.

The PDF intramural application package will be named as follows: Malcolm Feist CV Res Fellowship_Last Name_First Name

Mentor/Sponsor Requirements: A cardiovascular researcher at LSUHSC must mentor Recipients of these Fellowships. A letter from the faculty mentor/sponsor indicating his/her willingness to serve in this capacity is required. The letter must include a summary of the training plan for the fellow and alternate funding sources that may be applied to the project. Only one post-doctoral fellow and one pre-doctoral fellow per faculty mentor will be funded. Preference is given to applicants with the potential to be eligible for a K99, AHA Scientist Development Grant, or similar extramural funding opportunity. The mentor should describe the applicant’s eligibility for extramural funding in the letter of support accompanying the application. If a project involves multiple PI’s, one PI must be designated as primary. If the sponsor does not have active extramural funding, then evidence must be provided (in the initial application and subsequent progress reports) that he/she has submitted at least one research proposal for national funding during the previous year. The mentor must submit an annual evaluation of the recipients’ progress for review by the CCDS Board of Directors. Individuals listed as collaborators must also submit a letter indicating his/her willingness to serve in this capacity and provide a brief description of what he/she will contribute to the project.

3 Evaluation: Applications will be reviewed by the CCDS Board of Directors (possibly with the assistance of relevant experts not serving on the Board). Priority for funding will be based on the qualifications of the applicant and sponsor, the training potential of the research plan, and commitment of the applicant, sponsor, and Department to the training experience. Applicants are encouraged to review the Malcolm Feist Cardiovascular Research Fellowship Peer Review Form prior to submitting their application. All applicants will receive a copy of their final Peer Review Forms.

FONT SIZE: Arial 11. Provide at least one-half inch margins (top, bottom, left and right) for all pages. No applicant-supplied information can appear in the margins.
