Understanding Art 8th Grade Syllabus

Understanding Art: Students will use vocabulary to evaluate works of art. Students will learn how to apply their knowledge of safety and media to take care of their art and work space. Students will use collaboration to explore effective ways to apply different media to their creative assignment.

Common Core Essential Standards for 8th Grade:

V- Visual Literacy, CX – Contextual Relevancy, CR – Critical Response

8.V.1. Use the language of visual arts to communicate effectively. 8.V.2. Apply creative and critical thinking skill to artistic expression. 8.V.3. Create art using a variety of tools, media, and processes, safely and appropriately. 8.CX.1. Understand the global, historical, societal, and cultural contexts of the visual arts. 8.CX.2. Understand the interdisciplinary connections and life applications of the visual arts. 8.CR.1. Use critical analysis to generate responses to a variety of prompts.

Students in 8th grade art will need to bring a good number two pencil to class everyday. They will receive a grade for this task. They will receive a 100 for remembering to bring their pencil everyday. Three points will be deducted for forgetting to bring in their pencil to class each day. All other art supplies will be provided by our school.

Classroom Rules: 1. Be in your seat before the bell rings. 2. Be prepared with all needed materials. 3. Raise your hand for permission to talk. 4. Remain in your seat unless you need supplies. 5. Keep your hands, feet and objects to yourself. 6. Show respect to classmates and adults at all times. 7. No food, gum or drinks in class.

Grading Scale: A = 90 -100, B = 80 – 89, C = 70 – 79, D = 60 – 69, F = Below 60

Grading Policy: Each student’s final grade will be comprised of projects and class work. Their projects will make up 90 percent of their grade. Their class work will make up 10 percent of their grade. Their projects will be graded on several criteria such as: how well each student executes the proper steps involved, creativity, and craftsmanship. Students who put forth their best effort , and who complete their assigned project will not receive below an 80. Their class work will consist of a daily pencil grade (7th and 8th), thinking maps, analyzing a famous work of art, art appreciation work sheets, vocabulary, computer art, and research on a famous artist.

Mr. Hood uses a variety of teaching methods to teach our students new and exciting techniques in art. We use a variety of different media such as pencil, colored pencils, crayons tempera paint, India ink, clay, watercolors, markers, styrofoam, sharpie pens, and acrylic paint. This list is only an example of the materials we may use in art. There may be special projects which may require different materials.
