Course Objectives

- To understand the common causes of dyspareunia - To learn about the typical medical approach for dyspareunia - To learn how to adapt the physiotherapy evaluation and examination for the patient with dyspareunia - To review the pelvic floor anatomy - To practise the pelvic floor evaluation - To understand the clinical reasoning for the treatment of dyspareunia - To be able to establish a treatment plan and progression for the patient suffering dyspareunia - To understand the implications of the psychological aspect - To understand the importance of the multi-disciplinary approach to treatment - To become more proficient in manual treatment techniques for the pelvic floor and related structures - To learn about lubricants, insertion devices, sexual practises and techniques - To practise insertion techniques

- To understand the male uro-genital anatomy and physiology - To understand pathologies of the prostate - To learn about treatments for prostate cancer - To become able to adapt the treatment process for urinary incontinence to the male patient Course Schedule

Friday 8:30 am - 4:30 pm Registration Introduction Dyspareunia: vestibulodynia, vaginismus, fissure, lichen sclerosis Medical evaluation and treatment approach Physiotherapy evaluation (history) Review of anatomy and biomechanics of pelvic floor Physiotherapy evaluation (physical)

Saturday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Practical review of pelvic floor evaluation ( vaginal, anal) Specifics for physical evaluation of patient with dyspareunia Problem list, treatment plan, treatment approach Psychological approach Manual techniques: theoretical and practical session

Sunday 8:30 am – 4:30 pm Education, exercise, biofeedback, electrical stimulation Insertion techniques: practical session Treatment progression, control

Please note: This course is open to physical therapists, and includes practical sessions with vaginal and anal palpation. Prerequisite: Introductory pelvic floor course on urinary incontinence

REGISTRATION DEADLINE: November 5, 2014. Course limited to 24 participants. This course may be cancelled if a minimum number of participants is not reached by the registration deadline, in which case a full reimbursement will be given. In the case of cancellation by a participant, full reimbursement is given if notice is provided before the deadline. There will be no reimbursement after the deadline unless the space can be filled by a new registrant. We will also accept registration after the deadline if space is available.
