ADVERB NOTES
An Adverb describes or modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. An adverb tells how, when, where, why, how often, & how much. Example 1- She sneezed loudly. (Loudly modifies the verb sneezed.) 2- Her sneezes are really dramatic. (Really modifies the adjective dramatic.) 3- The sneeze exploded very noisily. (Very modifies the adverb noisily.) 4- Those jeans are quite costly. 5- I write good stories; I write them well. Adverbs can be cataloged in four basic ways: TIME, PLACE, MANNER, AND DEGREE.
TIME: These adverbs tell when, how often, and how long Today, yesterday, daily, weekly, briefly, eternally, tomorrow, soon Ex. 1 Yesterday, I watched The Wire. 2- Soon, it will be time to leave school for the real world!
PLACE: These adverbs tell where, to where, and from where Here, there, nearby, beyond, backward, forward, to, near Ex. Send her note over there. The store is near Blockbuster.
MANNER: These adverbs often end in LY and tell how something is done Precisely, loudly, effectively, smoothly, quietly, well, slickly The cat ran swiftly through the room when I scared it. We go boldly where no man has gone before. I am doing well.
DEGREE: These adverbs tell how much or how little Greatly, partly, partially, too (as well), substantially, entirely, sure The pizza was partly eaten. I want to go to the store too! The Big Mac was entirely eaten. TYPES OF ADVERBS Positive Form The positive form describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb without comparing it to anyone or anything else.
*The Model X vacuum cleans well and runs quietly. Comparative Form (-er, more, less) The comparative form compares two persons, places, things, or ideas. *The Model Y vacuum cleans better and runs more quietly than the Model X. Superlative Form (-est, most, least) The superlative form compares three or more persons, places, things, or ideas.
