Introduction: What do a limnologist, scuba diver, artist, engineer, chef, astronaut and inventor all have in common? Believe it or not – a lot when it comes to earth and space research at the Pavilion Lake Research Project (PLRP). Complete the activity below to learn more about the diverse and dynamic group of people who are working at this special place in British Columbia.

Link to Canadian National Standards for Geography:

Essential Element #2: Human characteristics of places and regions in Canada and the world

Geographic Skill #3: Organizing geographic information

 Prepare various forms of maps as a means of organizing geographic information.

Section A: Map the PLRP Team

Where does the team of people who work at Pavilion Lake come from? The project is located in Canada – are they all Canadian? What type of work do they do? Your job is to find a way to map the members of the PLRP team. A list of all of the team members (2010) is located on the PLRP website.

 First, decide how you will map and classify the information. (Will you map the team by the percentage of scientists from a state/province, by occupation? What type of map would show the information most effectively?)

 Second, map the data. You can create a map using a GIS application or a paper map (attached).

 Third, make sure that your map follows proper mapping conventions and contains all of the essential map elements. THE CANADIAN ATLAS ONLINE BRITISH COLUMBIA – GRADES 6 – 8 www.canadiangeographic.ca/atlas

Section B: Find members of the PLRP Team
