4 Fremont and Senator Colchrane as the president and VP Rhode Island Civil War Round Table candidates. In fact, the Republicans went so far as to change the name of the party for the election, and third Wednesday of the month at the William Hall campaigned as the National Union Party. Lincoln and the Library,1825 Broad Street, Cranston, R.I.; social hour Republicans removed VP Hamlin from the ticket, and at 5:30, meeting and speaker at 6:00. nominated Tennessee Democrat Andrew Johnson as VP, Chairman is Mark Dunkelman largely for political reasons. Lincoln supporters actively ([email protected]) campaigned by telling voters it was best “not to change horses in midstream” not to elect a new president in the Secretary is Len Levin ([email protected]) midst of a (Civil) war. But the Democrats were equally divided. The nominee was General McClellan. His Civil War Round Table of East Bridgewater support for the party platform, which called for peace with Dale Julius, president the Confederacy, was questionable at best. 508 378-2706 Setbacks on the battlefield occurred; particularly humiliating was Early raid on Washington. Lincoln [email protected] famously had Cabinet members endorse a memorandum noting his defeat in the coming election. At this dark ANNOUCEMENTS moment, the tide turned on the battlefield. Sherman captured Atlanta, Farragut damned torpedoes in Mobile Olde Colony Civil War Round Table can now be Bay, and Sheridan wreaked havoc in the Shenandoah found on the Web! Valley. Fremont withdrew his candidacy, in order that he not pull votes away from Lincoln reelection. With his re election in hand, Lincoln endorsed the 13 th amendment, and the institution of slavery was forever banned in the Our Previous meeting United Barbara Berensen States The Election of 1864 Most compelling of presentation by Barbara Berensen was not a review of the events, but the interpretation of the legal aspects of the election. Most telling was a question from new member Louis Ostrovsky, after which Ms. Berensen described the limitations and legalities of the 13th amendment. Minibit by Joe Dipoli General Darius Couch Joe described the history of this general who fought prominently at the battle of Chancellorsville. He is buried at the Mayflower Cemetery in Taunton.

Olde Colony Civil War Round Table 2015-2016 Such appreciation to the effort of Jack Kavanagh Program chair!

Most meetings begin at 7 pm with announcements from the President, followed by a presentation:

th The Civil War in 4, a video program from the Civil War The importance of the election was the outcome of the 13 Preservation Trust, organized by Dana Zaiser: amendment. The issues deciding the election were the re- election of Lincoln, abolishment of slavery, and the defeat October 17, 2015 of the Confederacy. There was opposition to Lincoln’s Jubilee reforms, who would allow Confederate states to resume Frank O’Rielly their status in the United States if supported by only 10 per “The Fredericksburg Campaign” cent of the local population. Thus the radical opposition November 19, 2015 party formed, supported by radical abolitionists, nominated Susan Kuecker minibit
