1. VOLUNTEERS – YU CHRISTMAS OPEN This coming weekend is the Christmas Open and we need volunteers. If you are coming to the track to watch, why not get closer to the action and avoid having to pay public admission fee. We need timers, people to hold tapes, rake pits, post results, etc. You can work just the morning session or the whole day. If you work the whole day, you get a FREE catered lunch. Hours worked will count towards 2009 volunteer commitment hours. If you are interested, please contact me via email by Thursday, Dec 4th at [email protected]

2. YUTC 2009 MEMBERSHIP FORMS NOW AVAILABLE! It’s that time of year! Our 2009 membership registration forms are now available on-line or through your coach. You will notice a difference this year, as we have streamlined the number of forms to juts three: 1. 2009 YUTC Registration Form (2 pages or back to front) 2. YUTC Power of Attorney (1 page) 3. 2009 OTFA Registration Form – not yet available from the OTFA. So, we will have to get you to fill out and sign this form later in the New Year.

2009 Fee Structure Changes: a. Membership Increase: In these economic times, the club executive has needed to increase the membership fees for 2009 in order to continue to offer the extensive program YUTC offers. These increases are required to cover off the increasing expenses that the club is accruing in travel (gas, accommodations) and meet fees. We have extensive travel expenses to cover with meets as last year’s Ontario Championships in Ottawa. 2009 will be no different with the club traveling to Timmins and Windsor for OTFA Championships.

Cost Comparison: Despite the increase in fees, YUTC’s membership fees are still less expensive then other Ontario Clubs. We conducted a detailed fees analysis verses the other clubs in the GTA and the province and when we compare our fee structure and program verses other clubs, we are still much lower. We have learned that one of the other GTA clubs membership fees will be in the area of $1,000.00 this year!

Arguably, you may find some clubs do offer a cheaper annual memberships but if you look closer, many are a pay as you go club and do not offer all the benefits that are included in our YUTC membership:  Track facility passes ($135)  OTFA registration fee ($45 to $95 per athlete in 2008)  Meet entry fees (varies per meet but typically $5 to 20 per event)  Awards Banquet  subsidized travel and accommodations b. Volunteer Commitment: In order to keep our fee structure lower then other clubs and still provide the programs we do, YUTC will try to raise more revenue verses 2008 by hosting more meets then we ever have before. However, to do this we will need involvement from the membership. In 2009, the volunteer commitment has been raised from 10 hours to 15 hours per member or the cost of $175.00 if the member does not wish to participate in volunteering. Without our membership being actively involved our club could not host the meets that we need to drive the revenue to off set the club expenses and lower membership fees.

In addition to the meets we traditional offer or host on behalf of the OTFA, we have added the following to our club hosting schedule: a. YU Spring Open May 2nd – a full day open meet. b. Summer Twilight Series will be increased from 3 to 4 meets. c. NEW for 2009 – 3 throws only Twilight Meets. Without our membership volunteers, assistance for the York varsity track team and the York University Kinesiology students, we would have to increase our fees. A member recently complained that they felt harassed by my call for volunteers. I apologize in advance for sounding like I am harassing you, but we can either volunteer for these meets or increase the meet fees. If any of the membership is not able to work the meets, but wants to help out, we do have other volunteering duties/committees we need help with; Awards Banquet, Sponsorship / Fund raising committees are just two other areas we need help with.

c. University Membership Structure – The executive has expended the university structure for 2009. Last year, we offered a slight discount to York varsity athletes to join the club. We have expanded that program to ensure that we maintain our university aged athletes and have two new university membership categories: i. York Varsity Alumni – available to recent YU grads who were members of the YU Varsity program. To help our recent graduates get on their feet, this fee available for up to 24 months after graduation. ii. Other Universities & Colleges Students – offered to current students attending other university and colleges. Must be able to show current student card to be eligible.

These university memberships are reduced verses the regular full year membership fees for the following reasons: iii. University tuition fees – are on the rise again. iv. University varsity athletes have “varsity team Fees” to pay to belong and compete for the university. For example, a first year varsity student may have to pay $200 to $300 just to compete on their university varsity team during the indoor season. v. University students are not expensive to the club during the university school year as many of them do not join until they return home for the outdoor season.

3. YUTC UNIFORMS / TRACK SUITS: T-shirts / Singlets & Shimlets: Be sure and fill correctly fill out the uniform section on the 2009 registration form. You will need to provide your t-shirt and singlet or shimlet size. The club will provide its female athletes the choice of either a singlet or a shimlet. If they would like to have both, they will need to buy the shimlet at the club cost of $35.00.

Shorts/Tights: The club will not be offering any shorts or tights as part of the uniform in 2009 due to the overall lack of use/demand by the athletes. The club has provided these in the past but only to have a very few athletes wear them in competition as most athletes prefer to compete in their own shorts or tights. The club does ask that the athletes please be fashion conscience and buy appropriate shorts and tights in either black or red, to match the club colours.

YUTC Track Suits – we will be doing a team order once a year for track suits. The YUTC track suits are Brooks Podium jacket and pant. Suits are 100% microfiber polyester with 100% moisture transfer polyester lining that is ideal team warm-up suit. The YUTC logo will be embroidered on the back and on the front left chest. YUTC is selling these team track suits at our cost. Cost for complete embroidered suit is $110.00 (taxes included).

Team order deadline: If you want one of these team warm up suits, you will need to have your money in to your coach by January 8th, 2009. We will not do another order this year.

York U Red & White Inter-Squad Meet Nov 27 & 28th at York University Complete results can be found at www.sport.yorku.ca Once again this was a fun team building meet for the varsity and some open athletes. For those of you who are not familiar with this meet, the varsity athletes are split into two teams and compete against each other. Afterwards, there is a team dinner where the winning team gets its meal bought by the loosing team. It’s a lot of fun with some high jinks going on. However, on a serious note there is some heavy competition going on as this meet represents a last chance for some to make the team. For others it’s a chance for the varsity athletes to make championship qualifying standards. YUTC of course has many athletes on the varsity team and also had some open athletes competing in this meet.
