House of Representatives Montpelier, Vermont Concurrent House Resolution H.C.R. 247 House concurrent resolution congratulating the 2008 Milton High School Yellowjackets Division II girls’ basketball championship team Offered by: Representatives Turner of Milton, Godin of Milton, Johnson of South Hero and Trombley of Grand Isle Offered by: Senators Condos, Flanagan, Lyons, Miller, Racine and Snelling Whereas, losing in the semifinal round in an interscholastic athletic playoff tournament can motivate a high school team to intensify its efforts the following season in its quest to win a state championship, and Whereas, the 2007–2008 top-seeded Milton High School Yellowjackets girls’ basketball team was afforded a special opportunity when it faced its 2007 semifinal opponent, the second-seeded Lamoille Union High School Lancers, a team it had previously defeated twice this season, in the championship game at the Barre Auditorium, and Whereas, the opening quarter’s concluding 14–13 Yellowjacket lead reflected two closely matched teams playing in a tight contest, and Whereas, during the second quarter, the young women basketball players from Milton decided that a convincing exhibition of their offensive capabilities was required to set the game on its proper course, and they concentrated their energy into hitting the basket on target, outscoring the Lancers 12–1, and were ahead 26–13 at the midgame break, and Whereas, this seemingly substantial point margin was nearly depleted in the third quarter as Lamoille discovered its talents and narrowed the Milton lead to only 40–38 with just 1:20 minutes left in the final quarter, and Whereas, two Yellowjackets, Heather Little and Brittany Rice, made successful last-second free throws which enabled Milton to win the game 42–38 and claim the 2008 Division II girls’ basketball title, and Whereas, the entire team, consisting of Ashleigh Adams, Lauren Ball, Stephanie Boyd, Stephanie Bull, Andrea Deuell, Kaitlin Geary, Heather Little, Mallory Machia, Michelle Nichols, Taylor Perras, Courtney Pidgeon, Brittany Rice, and Jordan Trombly, worked together to achieve this great victory, and Whereas, head coach Mike Lefebvre and assistant coaches Jim Deuell and Jim Harton prepared these young women to succeed on the basketball court, and team manager Rachel Branco was ready to assist the team as needed, now therefore be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives: That the General Assembly congratulates the 2008 Milton High School Yellowjackets Division II girls’ basketball championship team, and be it further Resolved: That the secretary of state be directed to send a copy of this resolution to Mike Lefebvre at Milton High School.
