INDUSTRIAL EXPERIENCE

TATA power station, Trombay (May-June '09)  Performed an in depth analysis of the Steam-cycle and the Combined-cycle processes, both of which are used in separate units to generate electricity  Spent over 40 hours in the unit 5, 6 and 7 control rooms analyzing the detailed schematics of the overall working  Assisted in the installation of the gas skid system, which would provide the plant with natural gas from GAIL to be used as an alternative to coal for firing the furnace  Noted the functions and the parts of the major auxiliary systems such as the Lube oil system, Sea water pump system etc. and gained insights into the framework of the system

MAJOR ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Carbon footprint of the sugar industry - Undergraduate thesis (Aug-Nov ‘09)  The objectives are o to assign a specific carbon footprint value to the major sugarcane-derived products in the market o to find out ways of reducing the carbon footprint of the Sugar industry in India  Reviewed the standard models used globally to determine the carbon footprint of industries  Analysed the life cycle of sugarcane and derived products  Listed the processes involved in the production and distribution of sugar and jaggery from fields to consumers and their contribution to the overall carbon footprint of the industry

Phase change storage type heat exchanger - Engg. design project (Aug-Nov’09)  Designed a heat exchanger which can supply a constant heat output of 6MW for 20 minutes  Surveyed designs and phase change materials used to make storage type heat exchangers  Modeled the heat exchanger so that it has commmercial value in improving the efficiency of boilers

Environmental implications of the use of biofuels in transportation – Junior thesis (Jan-Apr '09)  Studied extensively about biofuels and the experiments conducted with Biofuel use in I.C engines  Compared the emissions due to fossil fuel use with that of biofuel  Analyzed the effect of biofuel production on the ecosystem  Investigated the much debated Food v/s Fuel issue  Concluded by citing the pros and cons of producing and using biofuels in the Indian context

OTHER ACADEMIC PROJECTS

Potato harvesting machine - Kinematics of machinery project (Sept–Nov ‘08)  Proposed a four bar linkage mechanism to harvest potatoes from under the ground and collect them when coupled to a vehicle moving at a constant speed so as to ensure minimal resistance from the soil  Fabricated a working prototype to depict the mechanism Fabrication of screw jack assembly prototype - Manufacturing processes workshop (Aug–Nov ‘07)  Designed and fabricated the prototype for a screw jack assembly using 3 different machining processes  Compared the estimated time required with the actual time taken, accounted for idling time of labour, computed material wastage and suggested ways for minimizing production cost

Program to survey an area – C++ project (Oct ’06)  Program can be fed into robots, which can be used to study the contour and other surface features of a predefined area  Can be used to carry out surveys in areas with extreme climate conditions or collapsed buildings which are inaccessible to humans

Social Work  Member of NSS(National Social Service) (July ’06 – Nov ‘07) ◦ Visited a nearby village which was hit by drought and observed the techniques devised by the farmers to store rainwater and draw underground water using simple rural facilities and analysed whether the techniques can be viable in other places too ◦ Was a part of 'UNNATI', a drive to collect old/unused clothes to provide clothing for those affected by natural calamities ◦ Took active part in the Versova leg of a beach cleaning campaign ◦ Visited a school in Pune to understand the difficulties encountered by the underprivileged students and met with their families to dicuss the steps that could be taken to improve their situation  Part of the 'Geetamata' campaign to provide quality education to students from backward areas. (2007) ◦ Interacted with over 150 students and 2 local schoolteachers ◦ Provided them with insights about how to tackle the board exams and competitive exams ◦ Provided information about opportunities for further studies in cities/urban areas
