Overview – Year 3/4 – Striking & Fielding Games unit The games played in this unit are taken from YST - Top Sport initiative Focus: The unit aims to encourage children to: * develop batting, bowling, throwing and catching skills and perform these with control; * develop their ability to select from a range of skills they have acquired when playing competitive striking and fielding games; * develop a greater understanding of attack and defence in striking and fielding games; * understand and apply rules in striking and fielding games; * understand the importance of warming up before physical activity; * develop an appreciation of the importance of fitness and health; * recognise what is successful in their own and others’ performance and suggest how they can improve it. QCA Core Tasks: Playing e.g: games 3 v 1 or 4 v 1 in which the batter hits the ball and scores as many points/runs as possible before the fielding team returns the ball; games 3 v 1 or 4 v 1 scoring points/runs by running to different zones before the fielding team returns the ball; games, that they have made up and modified themselves. Vocabulary: In this unit children will have an opportunity to use a range of words and phrases, such as: Batting; fielding; bowler; wicket; tee; base; boundary; innings; rounder; backstop; score. Differentiation: Through outcome and adult expectations and support. Assessment: By observation against learning outcomes and through discussion with children.
