Grading Grades will be based on points earned from homework and projects, tests and quizzes, class and group participation. Please keep in mind that poor spelling and grammar on written work will lower your grade. Grades are not rounded. Grade Scale: A 90-100% B 80-89% C 70-79% D 60-69% F 59% and below Classroom Procedures

1. Students should be in their assigned seat and ready to work when the bell rings. 2. Students should come to class with the necessary materials. This includes pens (blue or black) or pencils, a red pen, your class notebook with paper to record notes, and any assignments or projects that are due. 3. All assignments and projects are due at the beginning of class on the due date. Late Work Policy- - Each student will receive one “late pass” per quarter. A “late pass” allows a student to turn in a homework assignment one day late for full credit. No credit will be given for any other late assignments. - Major projects will be accepted for half-credit within one day of the due date. After that, no credit will be given on major projects. - Printing is the responsibility of the student. Do not email assignments to me. I will not be able to print them and they will be counted as missing. Alternatives to use if there are printer issues might include using the library or emailing a friend or parent. 4. Students are responsible for getting any missed notes or assignments that were given during an absence. If a test or quiz is missed, it must be made up during lunch on the assigned make-up date. Make-up work will not be given for days of suspension or unexcused absences (cuts). If you suffer an extended illness, contact the teacher to discuss a schedule for you to turn in your work. 5. Each Monday students are expected to record their assignments for the week. Although the homework is posted on the Internet, it is not updated daily and should not be used in place of a planner.

Classroom Rules 1. Students are expected to be courteous and respectful to all classmates, teachers and guests. There will be no swearing, name-calling or interrupting of others. 2. No food or drink in class. (Water is okay) 3. Hats, hoods, beanies, etc. are not to be worn in the classroom. 4. Working on assignments for other classes, reading the daily newspaper, listening to music or using cell phones or other electronic devices is not permitted.

Binder Students should have a binder to hold and organize notes, handouts and assignments. It does not need to be a separate binder. Please make sure your notebook contains all of the work completed in health class; nothing should be thrown away. Your binder should be organized into two sections. One should be labeled “to save”, the other should be labeled “current work”.

Extra Credit Each quarter, extra credit will be offered periodically to the entire class. It is important that students take advantage of these opportunities since it will not be offered on an individual basis in order to make up for missing assignments or poor grades.

Plagiarism It is extremely important that students do not plagiarize. Student work must be in the student’s own words. If ANY part of an assignment is plagiarized, the student will receive a zero grade for the entire assignment. The school discipline policy for plagiarism will be strictly enforced. Dear Parents,

Welcome to health education! We are anticipating a very successful semester and are looking forward to getting to know your child. This course is designed to provide your son/daughter with an in-depth understanding of the many health issues facing today’s teens. This course will include a Growth, Development and Sexual Health Unit that is designed to provide students with the information, decision-making skills, and resources that will encourage thoughtful and responsible behavior, as well as to reinforce the values of your home and family. The unit will cover a variety of topics including dating, relationships, abuse and rape, marriage, the reproductive system anatomy and physiology, pregnancy and childbirth, abstinence, birth control, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV/AIDS education. A variety of teaching techniques will be used including lecture, discussion, guest speakers, videotapes, and written materials. As this is a skills building class, each student will also have the opportunity to practice the correct technique for putting on a condom using a test tube as a model. The State of California requires that we notify you of this unit and you are so notified. The written and audiovisual education materials we use are available for inspection. The law also provides that you may request in writing that your child not attend any portion of this unit, but instead attend an alternate school activity on the days that growth, development and sexual health topics are discussed.

During the nutrition and fitness unit, we may be creating trial mix as an assessment. The students will choose the ingredients to put in their trail mix but they may include nut products. Please contact us within a week if you have any concerns about this project. Health is a required class for graduation from the Pleasanton schools. Please be sure to regularly check your student’s grade. Poor grades are often due to missing assignments. It can also be very helpful when parents go over the requirements for assignments and projects with their students. Instructions to the website follow: www.pleasanton.k12.ca.us/amador  Faculty and Departments  Career Tech Education  Tony Battilega or Diane Farthing  look under “subjects taught” Health Once you are at the health site, you can bookmark or save it as a favorite for easier access in the future.
