The words effective, pedagogy and mathematics are problematic because different meanings are often ascribed to them or taken for granted. My intention is to make the terms more problematic by exploring further possible meanings. 9:30 – 10:30 am Workshop 1

1A It is the teacher, the teacher, the teacher

….. who must not only have a conceptual understanding of the mathematics, but who employs a pedagogy utilizing problem solving, reasoning, verifying, using different strategies, making connections, and communicating ideas. However, it is recognized in the research that teachers will teach as they perceive they have been taught (Lubinski & Otto, 2004) and it is the teacher who can make the changes. I will be looking at various problem-solving activities which lead onto investigations which can lead to a pedagogical shift in classrooms.

1B Authentic Mathematical Modelling for the classroom

In 2011 I had the privilege of working as part of a mathematical modelling team in Industry. In 2012 I used this experience to develop, trial authentic mathematical modelling activities for the classroom. This workshop will discuss findings from my research and practical ways to implement and encourage mathematical modelling within the mathematics classroom.

1C Algebra, Geometry (Junior) and Graphs (Senior) Ranee Prasad, Rosehill College and Masina Po’e-Tofaeon, Papatoetoe High School

Planning on getting your classes involved in some physical activity. Then make them do some KUNG FU! We will be looking at sharing some resources and ideas for teaching Algebra and Geometry. We also plan on sharing ideas on how to teach the 2.2 Graphs standards using Geogebra and graphics calculators. So please bring along your graphics calculator, computer or a device that you can use Geogebra on and come energised for some KUNG FU moves! See you all there

1D Motivational maths

I will present a selection of the strategies that I use to motivate my junior and senior maths classes. I use interactive lecturing, singing and dancing to help understanding and memory retention.

2A Writing unit plans to support effective teaching Marion Steel , Auckland University and Phil Glass, Dilworth College

As we design and run mathematics courses, the unit plans we write play a key role in encouraging teachers to use effective strategies and teaching practices. Come with an existing unit plan you want to rewrite, a course you are planning for, or just an open mind.

2B Teacher manuals for LEMMA booklets Caroline Yoon Auckland University

LEMMA: Learning Encounters with Mathematical Modelling Activities. This year, NZCER (New Zealand Council for Educational Research) will be publishing a series of booklets that use a mathematical modelling approach for some thorny concepts in the secondary curriculum: proportional reasoning, ratios, volume, circle geometry and antidifferentiation. Come along and help influence the design for the teacher manuals for these booklets, and go in the draw for a free booklet!

2C Flipping the Classroom Graham Atkinson Kristin School

The “flipped classroom” is an idea that has come from the States and is about turning the teaching time around by using technology. The teacher makes videos of teaching the skills and the students watch them at home rather than doing homework. Class time becomes an environment where the students know how to do the skill and then practice answering questions with the teacher as a facilitator. Anyone who attends should bring their laptop because Graham wants to show how free screen capture software can be used.

2D A guided exploration of MAP.

Where do you go to hunt for great resources? Have you looked at The Mathematics Assessment Project? It is an amazing collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley and the Shell Center team at the University of Nottingham, with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. These are some of the best task designers in the business! (http://map.mathshell.org/materials/index.php) We will look at some of the tasks, challenges and lessons that have been developed for both concept development and problem solving for students from Grade 6 to Grade 12 in the USA. Yes, you could do it alone but it's great to explore with other people! If you bring your own laptop (and the wifi works) we can pool what we find.
