Data Sheet - Floor Pressure Mats / Sensors

Overview

Floor pressure mat sensors are designed to detect a person walking over them. Pressure mat sensors were initially intended for use in the security industry and comply to BS 4737 Part 3 : Section 3.9, however many other applications have been found for these floor pressure mat sensors such as; Sensors for interactive games and toys, sensors for interactive multimedia systems providing accurately targeted presentations. Pressure mat sensors offer a low cost covert method of detecting a person and will provide years of service. Pressure mat sensors should be mounted on a flat even surface and then be covered with a conventional floor covering such as carpet or matting. These pressure mats should not be used in safety critical applications. The pressure mat sensor is only 3 mm thick; the switch element is sealed into a welded PVC envelope and is available in a range of sizes and shapes. Custom sizes or shapes can be made to order.

Pressure Mat Operating Pressure

The operating pressure specification for our standard sensitivity range is; An alarm condition shall be generated by any force of not less than 100 N applied normal to the surface of the pressure mat by means of solid circular test disc of diameter 60 +- 5 mm, and shall not be generated by force less than 20 N applied by the same means. In reality this means a person walking over the pressure mat sensor when it is concealed under conventional carpet or rubberized matting will be detected. The more sensitive versions will detect hand pressure.

Electrical Specification

The switch configuration for two wires sensors is normally open, closing when a person treads on the mat. The four wire versions also have a security loop to provide 24 hour monitoring, this is required for the security industry.
