APAMSA General Meeting Minutes

APAMSA Executive Meeting – Minutes Tuesday, November 4, 2003

I. Members Present a. Vicki, Jeff, Tina, Bryant, Kevin Tse, Sherry, Carrie, Sham, Margaret, David, Judy, Amy, Kevin Wu

II. Advisor Search (Jeff) a. Jeff’s faculty mentor is an Asian neurosurgeon, but he didn’t think that the surgeon would make a good advisor for us. b. He’ll keep on looking.

III. Community Advocacy (Daniel & Judy) a. Dr. Nguyen: He wasn’t comfortable with doing a presentation on Health Advocacy in the Asian Community. He’s also really busy, but had some good advice for us. i. Come up with a plan (i.e., educate community about health & diet) ii. Submit proposal to Pfizer along with a VMA sponsorship. iii. Ideas for plans: make brochures to distribute to town/church meetings, smoking, diabetes, HTN, or hyper-XOL health education talk b. We could do some community-focused groups or events and get funding from the Graduate Student Association. c. Targeting outreach to refugees: i. Need to contact interest groups ii. Contact county public health agencies to educate their workers on needs of Asian community. iii. Professor of Oriental/Eastern Medicine can give a seminar (get funding?). Potential speaker: Jennifer Muffet d. Barbara Brody: She is involved with vision screening to minority children. i. She wants to work with us and can give us a presentation on Tues/Thurs after 2:30 pm @ her clinic. (Maybe 1st or 2nd week of December for people interested)

IV. Bank Account (Amy) a. USE Credit Union wants a minimum balance of $450 or else we get monthly fees of $8. b. Washington Mutual: we can get free checking, but we have to pay for our first order of checks ourselves c. We should see if we can get a bank account through GSA so there’s more continuity (less trouble transferring accounts over when we have to pass on leadership).

V. Finance (Tina & Sherry) a. Checked with GSA, funding determined by need i. Forms to fill out (SOLO forms to register as a student organization) ii. Need to be turned out before biweekly GSA council meetings. VI. Campus Outreach Events (Margaret, Kevin W) a. Margaret contacted National Bone Marrow Assoc b. Kevin Wu will get more info on Hepatitis c. ~5 Asian student groups on undergrad campus: we could combine efforts or do our own. Either way, we should hold our events on the main campus to get more exposure. d. If we have events, we can get it published in the Guardian (newspaper) or posted on the Marquee in Price Center

VII. Website (Bryant) a. Need more pics b. Want to post constitution c. Check out other school’s site d. Front page: Mission statement & upcoming events e. Message board?

VIII. Constitution a. 9/10 members voted to ratify the constitution b. Daniel Chiem voted against ratifying (just to be different…dork. )

IX. Social Events (Carie) a. Jeff’s place for movie doesn’t work. b. Maybe lunch after 12 noon in December. i. Tentative: Wed, December 3, 2003. Restaurant TBA.

X. Next Meeting a. Thursday, December 4, 2003. Room TBA. b. Vicki will be back from the National Meeting, so she can give us some new ideas. c. All other committees write project proposals for the next meeting.
