Frozen Otter 2018 Email Communication 2 Sent January 11, 2018

I hope everyone is excited and well prepared for the race. If you haven’t done so already, PLEASE check out all of the documents on event page (“Files” tab).

The latest forecast for the forest has wind chills down to around -10F, which does NOT put the extreme gear requirement into play (was that 135 sighs of relief I heard?). I cannot stress enough that the conditions are still extremely dangerous if you are not properly prepared, so I encourage everyone to make sure your gear will allow you to survive in the case of an emergency. I outlined a scenario to consider in a Facebook post which is now on the website under the files tab you just looked at.

Assuming there isn’t a catastrophic failure by UPS, we will have Skratch available at the checkpoints!!! They have been very kind to support us in recent years and have a great product. If you feel so moved, please express some thanks on social media.

Cell coverage is US Cellular in the Forest which means US Cellular is best, Verizon and Sprint are next, the rest probably wont have much coverage. Think about a prepaid if you need good signal.

Other Items to Note  All vehicles are required to have a Wisconsin State Parks pass. I would suggest getting 2 days worth. They can be purchased when you get to the park at the entrance station. There is usually someone there; otherwise, there is a self-pay.  Early check-in is available at the Mauthe Lake Shelter from 4:30-6:30pm on Friday. If that’s at all a possibility, I highly recommend it, as it gets pretty busy in the morning.  Waivers are available for download on the website. Things move more quickly if you print and sign yours ahead of time.  Everyone is required to attend the pre-race briefing at 9:30am. It is at the same location as check-in.  I’ll mention it again at the pre-race briefing because I can’t stress enough to be kind and thankful to the volunteers. They are not employees and are suffering with all of you out of the kindness of their hearts. Without them, there would be no race.

See everyone this weekend!
