Green Engineering Program Committee GEPC

1. Name of Technical/Program Committee: Green Engineering Program Committee

2. Officers:

GEPC currently has a leadership team comprised of co-chairs, which has its genesis in two working groups that were merged to form the Green Engineering Program Committee. This includes Jason Slagle, who led the Green Aviation Working Group and Valerie Lyons, who led the Green Energy Working Group. Jason and Valerie have been leading the GEPC since 2009. Now that GEPC has reached critical mass, we are transitioning to a Chair and Vice Chair organizational structure. The Vice Chair will serve a two-year role prior to assuming the Chair position. Candidate nominations are presently being accepted for the Vice Chair position, and several highly qualified individuals have expressed interest.

6. Honors and Awards Activities:

The GEPC had initially focused on creating a new Green Engineering award for AIAA. The focus has now changed to identifying two pre-existing awards within AIAA that GEPC can co-sponsor and support.

GEPC recognized member Valerie Lyons at the ASM 2013 conference for her 37 years at NASA and contributions to the committee. Valerie retired from NASA at the beginning of 2013.

7. Publication Activities:

Include a description of any publication activities during the year.

 GEPC submitted an annual report in 2012  A committee website was created that houses the membership information, calendar of events and files from all of the committee meetings.  Article: “Introduction to the Green Engineering PC” included in High Speed Air-breathing Propulsion newsletter

8. Public Policy and White Paper Activities:

 Contributed to public policy key issues, information papers and AIAA briefing sessions.  GEPC members also participated in Congressional Visits Day (CVD).

9. Standards Activities:

None.

10. Education Activities:

 Green Aviation Webinar on the Subsonic Ultra Green Aircraft Research (SUGAR) program prepared and presented by member Marty Bradley.  AIAA Aircraft Design Competition RFP for a hybrid electric regional passenger aircraft developed by member Marty Bradley and accepted as 2012-2013 Aircraft Design Competition topic.

3 Green Engineering Program Committee GEPC

 Coordinated with the FAA on their similar design competition for a hybrid electric passenger aircraft  Talking to Gas Turbine TC about jointly sponsoring an engine design competition for a hybrid electric propulsion system.  Actively supported K-12 STEM activities including “Engineers as Educators”, “Ask Polaris” and “Ask an Engineer” 11. COMMITTEE interactions with AIAA Sections Activities: Include a description for the year. For example:

Many GEPC members are active council members for their local sections, including the GEPC leadership. We plan to leverage this connection in 2013 to develop regional activities.

12. COMMITTEE interactions with other AIAA TCs/PCs Activities: Include a description for the year. For example:

 Liaisons established: . Air Breathing Propulsion TC’s – HSABP, GTE, ABPSI . Aircraft Design TC . Terrestrial Energy Systems TC . Energy Optimized Aircraft and Equipment Systems PC . Applied Aero TC . EPT CoS – Electric Propulsion Testing Standards . ETC – Emerging Technologies Committee . Adaptive Structures TC . Propulsion for Future Flight TC  Developed jointly sponsored design competition with Aircraft Design TC  Joint conference sessions with ABPSI, GTE, ASE, APA, and FD TC’s  Presented a GEPC overview and introduction session at numerous TC meetings to bolster awareness, recruit new members and establish liaisons.

13. COMMITTEE interactions with other Societies Activities: Include a description for the year. For example:

 Liaisons established: . IEEE . IGTI . ASME . CAFE

16. Best practices/Lessons learned

 Over the past year, GEPC established a solid membership base as well as the key organizational structure including subcommittees. More work remains to further develop these subcommittees and their activity plan. Additionally we are now focused on placing all members in an active role.

17. Other items to note:

2012 was the Green Engineering Program Committee’s third year in existence, and we continue to exhibit a positive performance trend, generating much interest in the industry and holding numerous activities and events. GEPC aims to put AIAA at the forefront of this burgeoning area. The committee’s efforts continue to grow to help support, nurture and coordinate these events and activities.
