REMINDER: If you are unable to serve as greeter or invocator you need to find your replacement!!

“The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of SERVICE as a basis of worthy enterprise.” 1 Charlie Sheen category of “winning”—I have neither the “goddesses” he does, nor the “lapse from reality”, but I Upcoming Events consider myself to be the winner) I have been grateful for the honor and affirmation of serving as your President for the Northeastern Food Pantry Drive – There’s no doubt 2010-2011 Rotary year). about it…times are tough and our local food bank needs help! As your President I have been afforded the Due to the poor economy, donations (monetary and food) to opportunity (and, I think, duty) to represent you at seminars, the Northeastern Food Bank are down significantly. The tough meetings, conferences, and banquets where I have expanded part is that more people are relying on the Food Bank’s services my circle of colleagues and friends, AND where I have learned than ever before. Let’s do our part to help our neighbors, much much more about the impressive organization RI (that’s friends and family and Stick it to Hunger today! It’s sad that us!) really is. I’m NOT an apple polisher who wants to “go on” every day, people in our community go hungry. Hunger has in Rotary—being President of York-East has fulfilled both my spread in York County and we are now fighting hunger not only expectations and my hopes AND rewarded me beyond that— in our cities, but in our suburbs and our rural areas as well. But, I’ve learned that until you get REALLY involved in Rotary Tuesday, June 7th and Tuesday, June 14th, bring your monetary beyond the local club level, you can’t really appreciate the true donation which will be used to purchase grocery gift cards for quality and immensity of Rotary’s reach and contribution to the Northeastern Food Pantry. Your donation will help fill the this fragile and delicately balanced orb on which we live. And shelves of the pantry by allowing us to give them much needed until you commit (both financially AND with time) beyond your funds to purchase food and supplies. The funds we raise are annual dues and coming to breakfast, you don’t truly being matched with a Rotary District Matching Grant! We understand or participate in Rotary’s objective, which is “to must raise $1500 to receive the grant! All members giving encourage and foster the ideal of SERVICE as a basis of worthy a $50 or more donation to the Food Pantry will receive one enterprise.” Because I’m retired, I had the time in this year to make up credit. The Board is allowing one make-up per do some things I might have chosen not to do 3 years ago member. We feel the importance and continued support of all because of the time commitment (and that helps me to Rotary projects both near and far show the commitment our appreciate and encourage the commitment to Rotary of those members are making to our communities and the world we live of you who are still working , and running businesses) AND in by making it a better place for all! For questions on this reminds me that when Paul Harris began Rotary, it was with project, contact Wendy Keessee or Elizabeth Wolf. and for the Presidents and CEO’s of businesses and companies —busy (men) with great responsibilities and commitments, who were offered the opportunity to “go beyond” their Farewell from President Jim primary business and family commitments in grateful acknowledgement and recognition of the gifts and talents they I will spare you the “sob story” of how much I will miss being had received and to share their abilities and resources with the President of the Rotary Club of York-East. I will also tell you that communities to which their business successes were indebted. for me it genuinely IS a sob story, because I have very much (Many of our members exhibit the generosity and commitment appreciated the honor of being your President for the past reflected in that vision, and some have yet to grasp it.) I will year. Instead, I offer you here my earnest thanksgiving and my continue in the next year to “infect” you with the Rotary cause deepest respect and gratefulness for the opportunity afforded and object, and I will continue to encourage {beg} you to me. Recently, Winnie and I had lunch at a local eatery, and generously contribute to the Rotary Foundation). recognized a fellow President of another Rotary Club (we had We have “reset” our club in the 2010-2011 Rotary been together in our PETS training) in the booth next to ours. year. I have tried to be the lightning rod for that Immediately after introductions with his guest, he held up six transformation. I am indebted to Rotary International and to fingers and with a broad smile, announced “only 6 more District 7390’s preparation in my President Elect Training weeks”. I didn’t “get it” at first, until he explained that we both Seminar (PETS), and for the vision of those who serve us at the had only six more weeks until our terms as President of our District and International level. Rotary is changing to meet the respective Rotary Clubs would end. I nodded affirmation and demands and expectations of our changing culture. It (WE) then began an inventory of my feelings in this final month+ of have great needs to make the changes that will serve both serving as your President. I understand that in Rotary, EVERY those of “the greatest generation” AND those of the Boomer MEMBER is expected to be of the caliber and desire of and GenX (and beyond) generations. It is NOT an easy professional persons to be President, and that is why I consider transformation—the values, the mores, the methods, the it a high honor to have been elected by you to serve in this expectations are so different! I believe that as we all embody venerable volunteer position. (Yes, I know that I was elected the vision of what the future demands, we will also incorporate because Carol Gottschalk-Smith couldn’t talk anyone else into the means of change, and adapt to the differences that saying “yes”, and yes, I remember that I too, told her “no” harmonious life will require. It will necessitate changes of twice before accepting her invitation). But you know what? attitude—“OTHERS deserve the same acceptance as I do”. It Those of you who said “no”, or who ran and hid when you saw will necessitate an acceptance of change-the definition of her coming were the losers!!! (Please don’t put me in the insanity is to “continue doing things the same as we’ve always “The object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of SERVICE as a basis of worthy enterprise.” 2 done them previously, and to expect DIFFERENT outcomes”. It (with no clue as to what our “new” By-Laws will stipulate, the will require commitment (as opposed to sacrifice) of leaders two positions that provide the NECESSARY continuity for our AND followers who wish to make a difference. IF we truly club are the positions of Secretary (who do ya love?-Secretary, believe in what RI is and stands for, it will necessitate financial Angie Hartman? and who do ya count on-Treasurer, Tom support and time involvements. It will mean that Rotary will Zellers? ). I have, for the past 11 months depended on Tom’s have to rise in our list of priorities (and it’s WORTH IT!). It will knowledge, history, and dedication to our club, and to Rotary require us to consider ALL human beings as “worthy” simply International. I know, and I TRUST that Tom has a grasp on our because (as Oprah recently said “simply because you were finances, and he has frequently questioned practices he didn’t born”). AND it will motivate ALL of us who are Rotarians to consider appropriate for our club—THANK YOU Tom! It’s really embrace a vision of “the global village” beyond our local nice to be able to look at a bill, recognize its’ legitimacy, and communities. forward it to someone like Tom, and say, “pay it”! And know that he will.

Another “going away” thought from President Jim The unheralded “hero” and “staple” of our club is ANGIE

HARTMAN, our secretary. We All enjoy Angie’s presence in our

Many of our members have their dues paid for them by their meetings as she greets us when we enter the ballroom at employers. That’s a wonderful affirmation to both the Heritage Hills, and we eagerly await her announcement that employee, the value/reputation of Rotary, AND the community “our number” has been drawn for the 50/50, but FEW of us are —and a great “perk” for employees! It probably artificially aware that SHE is the HEART of our Rotary Club!!! . (I guess that increases our membership roster. Yet our average attendance is why the District, and the Downtown club PAY secretaries!!!) is running at something close to 50%. It has been suggested by A year ago, I had no idea what was in “that tub” in which our one of our Board members who is also an employer, that in the club’s belongings are kept at Heritage Hills (Do YOU know?). future we report to those who pay the dues, the attendance Angie did, and she even kept “the overflow” at her home. A records of employees for whom dues are paid. Why not? IF it is year ago I didn’t know what was expected of clubs to report to a benefit paid for by the employer, and it is NOT being used by District 7390. PETS training didn’t prepare us for that. How the employee, what benefit is it? Why continue it? It might about you? Angie knew. Thirteen months ago I didn’t know reduce our membership number, but increase our commitment where we got our “trading banners”. Angie did. When I became and involvement to Rotary. What do you think about this idea? President, I had no idea of how to keep records of our club’s activities. Angie did. I could go on and on, but I’m sure you get Still another thought! my point—even though I’m sure you don’t fully understand or fully appreciate ALL that Angie is and does for the Rotary Club In Rotary, the Presidency is automatically a ONE YEAR term. of York-East. SHE, not I, deserves to be “appreciated” at the That’s cool because of burn out, and it’s acceptable because end of this Rotary year. Let us ALL dedicate this year to Angie EVERY Rotarian is expected to be “of Presidential quality” (YES, Hartman!!! that includes YOU!!). I support that system. HOWEVER, it renders difficult the continuity of the ongoing nature of the club. I have very much enjoyed sharing from the beginning of my term as President, the business, the goals, and everything about our club with our President Elect, Elizabeth Wolf—a wonderful person, and a “dyed in the wool” Rotarian. AND, I’m happy that Joe Hackett and Ray Grudi have already surfaced as our Presidents 2 and 3 years from now. (That REALLY speaks well of our club, and of our members’ understanding and affirmation of what Rotary is). For ME, there is both advantage (new ideas, change of leadership) in changing officers every year, AND there is a built-in lack of continuance. In OUR CLUB
