FHS Class of 2011 Local Scholarship Information is Here!

Let Mrs. Sharer know if you are accepted to a college and tell Mrs. Minneci if you receive any scholarships/awards.

All of these applications are due by March 18, 2011 unless otherwise noted

You can apply for many of the local scholarships by filling out one application form. This form will be copied and sent to all of the local scholarships that you indicate an interest in. This form is available in the College and Career Center.

The local scholarships listed below have forms available in the College & Career Center after February 7.

o Becky Wilson Holloway Memorial Scholarship…2.5 & involvement

o Ferndale Garden Club Scholarship…minimum 3.0 GPA. Student must have a strong academic science background and be going into one of the following fields of study: biology, horticulture, zoology, environmental science, forestry, agriculture, landscape design, conservation, green technology, city planning, civil engineering, bio or animal science.

o Ferndale Rotary Achievement Award…3.0 GPA, must attend MI college & complete 10 volunteer service hours.

o Gage Products Company Scholarship…Major in chemistry or engineering, 2.0 GPA

o Jack and Jill of America, Inc

o Lennon Foundation Scholarship…3.0 GPA and involvement required

o Mary Smith Memorial Scholarship…character, academics, leadership

o Pleasant Ridge Foundation Scholarship…Community volunteerism

o Pleasant Ridge Woman’s Club Scholarship…Minimum 3.0 GPA, all students who live in district may apply.

Don’t forget to check the end of the bulletin for scholarships posted in previous bulletins and are still available. Ayn Rand Essay Contest Contests for high school students based on Ayn Rand books. Go to www.aynrand.org/contests for essay topics and instructions. Community Caring Program Scholarships for students in the tri-county area. Based on transcript and essay. Go to www.communitycaring.org for application. Deadline is March 11. Detroit Economic Club Scholarship Min 3.2 GPA, demonstrated leadership and FAFSA shows a need for financial aid. Go to www.cfsem.org for application. April 1 deadline. Dick & Betsy DeVos Scholarship $5,000- $10,000 scholarships for students admitted to Northwood University and can show a demonstrated talent in entrepreneurship. Min 3.0 GPA. Essay required. Application and info at www.northwood.edu/mi/financialaid/funding youreducation/. Deadline is February 20. Eastern Michigan University Scholarships For students enrolling at EMU. Application available @ www.emich.edu/finaid/scholarships.php Kroger “I Can Make History” Contest 4 categories to enter in: art, essay, music and poetry. Go to www.icanmakehistory.com for info and to download registration forms. Deadline is February 28. Michigan Retailers Association Scholarships for members of the MRA, their employees and families. Apply online @ www.retailers.com/mra. Applications must be requested by March 15 and submitted by April 1. Michigan Schools and Government Credit Union Scholarship Memorial scholarships for high school students. Go to www.msgcu.org, and click on Rudolph Heino Scholarship information for requirements. Deadline is March 3. New Metropolitan Detroit Club of the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women’s Club $1,000 scholarship to a student attending a Black college or university. Min 3.0 GPA, essay required. See Mrs. Sharer for application. Deadline is Feb 18. Oakland Community College Chancellor’s Scholarship $2,500 scholarship. Must have applied to OCC, min 3.0 GPA. Go to www.oaklandcc.edu/FinAid/chancellor.aspx for application. Deadline is March 15 Realtors Association Scholarship Up to 40 scholarships will be awarded to area seniors…based on academics and extracurricular activities. Application available @ www.mcraonline.com/scholarship. Deadline is mid March. Rosa Parks Scholarship Foundation $2000 scholarships for graduating seniors based on scholarship, leadership and dedication to the civil rights principals of Rosa Parks. Must have a 2.5 GPA or above and have financial need. Application available @ www.rosaparksscholarshipfoundation.org. Deadline is March 1. Royal Oak Musicale Financial Awards Several awards for students majoring in music at an accredited college, conservatory or university. For information and application forms, call Mrs. Grace Brockett at 248-435-2753. Shell Oil Co. Technical Scholarship $2,500 for graduating senior enrolling in engineering or geosciences at universities identified by Shell. See Mrs. Sharer for info or go to http://goo.gl/RFDek and click on High School Seniors tab for application and information. Deadline is Feb 15. Tip Toppers Club of Detroit Scholarship for a “tall” graduating senior. Girls must be at least 5’10” and guys must be at least 6’2”. Go to www.tall.org/clubs/mi/detroit or email [email protected]. Women’s Retail Network (GM) Providing scholarships up to $5,000 to females interested in Automotive Retail careers. Go to www.gmsac.com for application. Deadline is April 15. Remember-Guys must register with the Selective Service when they turn 18 years old. You can do so at your local post office or www.sss.gov. You will not get federal aid if you don’t register.

What is FAFSA? FAFSA is the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. To apply for federal student aid for college or career school and for most state and institutional aid, you must complete and submit the FAFSA form each year that you attend. You and your parent must have a pin on file to begin. Go to www.pin.ed.gov to set it up. Next go to www.fafsa.ed.gov to fill out the FAFSA form. REMEMBER- DO NOT USE THE .COM SITE! Deadline is March 1, 2011. It is much easier to do it with your (and parents) completed 2010 income tax form.

The next ACT test is February 12 th. You must have already registered for it to take it on that date. Be prepared and remember to get a good night sleep before you come in.

ACT Test Preparation Workshop

These workshops are designed to prepare students who plan to take the ACT college entrance exam. Timed practice sections cover each area of the test. Cost is $85 and workshops are held in several locations throughout the year. Come to the College and Career Center for information. . Fill out the FASA form by March 1!

Scholarship Criteria: 3.5 GPA, min 27 ACT, admitted to a US college, involved in school, athletic and community service and are a US citizen. Deadline is May 1, 2011.

University of Dayton is offering a $10,000 Leadership to Service Scholarship to a senior who is graduating from FHS and has been accepted to the University of Dayton. See Mrs. Sharer for application form. Deadline is Feb 15.

Detroit Economic Club Scholarship

To qualify for this $2,000 need based scholarship, you must have a 3.2 GPA or better, demonstrate leadership, and have overcome a hardship to achieve both academic & personal goals. Deadline is April 1, 2011. Applications are available at www.cfsem.org. Select “scholarships” from the home page.

KFC Colonel’s Scholarship

. Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.75

. Enroll in a public college or university within Michigan

. Plan to pursue a bachelor’s degree

 National President’s Scholarship- for sons or daughters, step-sons or step-daughters, grandsons or granddaughters of veterans. Must have completed 50 hrs of community service and verify it. Four (4) letters of recommendation are required. Deadline is 3/1/11. See Mrs. Sharer for application form.

 Medical Career Scholarship- $500 for sons & daughters, grandsons or granddaughters, or great grandchildren of veterans. This is a need based scholarship and applicants should be in top quarter of class. Deadline is 3/15/11. applications available at www.michalaux.org. *********************

Wm. G Coyne Credit Union One Scholarship

You must have completed 30 or more hours of documented community service work, be a member of Credit Union One for at least 6 months, and have a 3.0 or better GPA. Info and application at www.cuone.org/about/documents/ScholarshipFAQ.pdf. Deadline is 2/15/11.

To qualify, you must attend a Michigan public state institution, community college, a vocational training institution or one of the private colleges list on the application. Deadline is Feb 11, 2011. *********************************************************** The Schureman Scholarship Program is for graduating seniors who have lost their fathers because of death or loss of parental rights before reaching the age of majority. The $7,500 scholarship can be used only at one of the 15 public universities in Michigan. You must have a 3.0 and demonstrate leadership and character through extra curricular activities, volunteer involvement, or work experience. You also must have a major that leads to a career in law, dentistry, nursing or medicine. Go to www.cfsem.org for an application or see Mrs. Sharer for more info. Deadline is June 1, 2011.

The Islamic Society of North America has 20 scholarships available to graduating Muslim students with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Go to [email protected] for more info. Deadline is May 1, 2011. ************************************ The Michigan Oil and Gas Producers Education Foundation (MOGPEF) is accepting applications for their scholarships. Qualified applicants must have a 3.0 GPA and be pursuing a degree in a field of study that will allow them to obtain full time employment in the crude oil and natural gas industry.
