Marie Poppy, Treasurer was excused as she was out of town. Approval of Minutes: Tabled to the February meeting. LVCC Report: Tabled to the February meeting. Treasurer’s Report: Tabled to the February meeting. CDDC Report: Tabled to the February meeting. Request for Incidental Liquor License by Comedy Sportz at 929 W. Belmont: Tabled to Feb. meeting Presentation by Chicago Fire Chief Rocosalva: Chief Rocosalva informed us that many deaths are due to individuals not having a working smoke detector in their residence. Most reported fires occur between 10pm-7am. The City of Chicago passed an ordinance in 1982 that every residence must have a smoke detector 15 feet from the sleeping areas. Individuals that are landlords are required to provide a smoke detector to the tenants. The tenant is responsible for maintaining the smoke detector by purchasing batteries and checking on the unit. The Chief recommended checking the smoke detector twice a year when you change time on the clocks. The Chicago Fire Department last year gave away 42,000 smoke detectors. Any individual can go to a local firehouse and receive a free smoke detector. Only your name and address are need to be provided to receive a free smoke detector. The Chief also suggested every unit perform a fire drill and have a designated place to meet outside the unit. Also have two exits in every unit. If there is a fire drop to the floor and crawl to exit. Feel the door with the back of your hand. If the door is hot do not open the door. Also you can purchase an escape ladder which costs about $30.00 at many stores. The ladder hangs from the upper floors. Call 911 if you have a fire. If you are on an upper floor yell and wave a sheet so the fire personnel can see you. The State of Illinois now has a state law that became effective Jan.1, 2007 that all residences must have a carbon monoxide detector. The symptoms of carbon monoxide are flu like and your face will be cherry red. The Chief recommended to keep on your refrigerator a list of medications that you take. Also on your cell phone under-ICE (in case of emergency) list your emergency contacts. Currently the fire department responds to calls-80% ambulance requests and 20% for fire. Chief Rocosalva could be reached at 312-747-1699. Presentation by Representative John Fritchey: Representative Fritchey reported that the session ended on Tuesday and the 95th General Assembly began on Jan. 10th. The legislative boundaries for Representative Fritchey are Armitage to Lawrence and Halsted to Western. Rep. Fritchey encouraged residents to pay attention to what is happening in Springfield concerning taxes, criminal laws, education and local initiatives. The two issues for the last session were the rate freeze and property taxes. The Senate and House both passed versions of bills for property taxes and rate increases. Neither bill passed both chambers and did not go to the Governor for further action. Rep. Fritchey stressed that education needs a steady stream of income. The current funding for education is insufficient. The solution may be to raise income and sales taxes. Also Rep Fritchey is looking at changing how property is accessed. Rep. Fritchey is working on legislation in the area of limits on campaign contributions and the award of state contracts, changes for the Cook County veto system, pension changes to close loopholes and increase tuition tax cut for children in public and private schools. You can contact look up potential bills or laws at www.ilga.gov. Rep. Fritchey will try to help us with funding for Agassiz schools and local parks. Rep. Fritchey can be contacted at [email protected]. Second Presentation/Request by Mad River for a Loading Zone at 2909 N. Sheffield: Matt Ochse, General Manager, from Mad River made the second request a loading zone for an area for cabs to park to pick up patrons as they leave Mad River. This would help with traffic congestion and also may reduce the noise level of cabs honking their horns and patrons yelling for a cab. The requested hours are 9p.m. to 4a.m. Currently Mad River is using a loading zone located in front of Soprano’s. Also Mad River is trying to have their patrons exit toward the south and catch a cab near George and Sheffield. This will help to reduce the nose level on Sheffield. Mad River also has a valet at closing to assist the process with patrons leaving. Mad River starts to turn on lights at 1:15 a.m with the last call at 1:30 a.m. They are having patrons leaving over a period of time instead of all at one time. They also have 7-10 security personnel outside at closing to direct patrons to go south to catch a cab. Their liquor license hour is 2a.m. on Fridays (doors shut at 1:50 a.m.) and 3a.m. on Saturday (door shut at 2:50 a.m.). A motion was made by Kevin Abercrombie and seconded by Jeff Simpson to approve the request for a loading zone from 9p.m. to 4:00am. The motion passed and a letter will be sent to Alderman Tunney on this matter. Presentation by Cosi for a Liquor License at 1023 W. Belmont: The Manager of Cosi, Winona, informed us that Cosi has applied for a liquor license. They hope to serve beer and wine from 11:00 a.m. to 10:00p.m. They serve food and would like to sell liquor with a meal. A member commented that they failed to shovel the sidewalk when it snowed in early December. The location has new management and Winona assured us this issued will be addressed. This item will be placed on the February agenda for a second presentation and a vote. Presentation by Wellington’s: Avi Kopelman of Wellington’s came to introduce us to his business. Wellington’s is located at 1300 W. Wellington and opened on July 1, 2006. They have done extensive work on the structure. We want to thank Wellington’s for hosting our post holiday party. The venue looks great so stop in and patronize our business member. Announcements : Marsalek informed the membership of the death of our member, James Andelin. CLVN sent a sympathy card to the family. Mr. Andelin was a local actor and a long time member of our neighborhood. Marsalek appointed a nominating committee which is required under our By-Laws for the March elections. The committee will consist of Terry Diamond (Chair), Jackie Price, Anita Constant, Aaron Harkin and Norb Tatro. Thanks to the Chicago Police Department for the arrest of the perpetrator of a sexual assault over the Thanksgiving holiday. CLVN sent a letter acknowledging the arrest to Superintendent Phil Cline. Chef Everett will be cooking on Jan 25th at 6pm at Lawry’s located at 1028 W. Diversey. The cost is $10 for food and a cash bar. A permit was issued for 844 W. Wolfram to wreck and remove a three story building and a garage. We will have a summer movie in the park thanks to Central Lake View Merchants. Please email Marsalek at [email protected] if you would like the movie to be shown on a Friday or Sunday in June. You can also send an email with a title of the movie you would like to see. We hope to offer a movie suitable for all ages. The Chicago Cubs are hoping to have a Dave Matthews concert at Wrigley Field in the evening on July 6 & 7, 2007. Send Marsalek an email on your thoughts on the concert. Dues for CLVN were due Jan 1, 2007 which will cover the 2007 calendar year. Please send you dues to Diann Marsalek at 1108 W. CTA Report: Norb Tatro, our CLVN representative for the Brown Line construction, reported to us that the Diversey station will close April 1, 2007 for one year. Wellington will close April 1, 2008 for a year. Work on the triple tracking from Belmont to Fullerton is starting so expect delays on the el. Tatro suggested looking for alternative routes as this work will take 2-3 years to complete. Tatro will keep us updated on new developments. New Business: We received complaints of the street being filthy and issues with garbage cans in the 900 block of Fletcher. Marsalek will contact the Ald. Tunney and 44th Ward Superintendent of Streets and Sanitation. Agassiz: Susanna Delisi thanked members and Central Lake View Merchants for the success of their Wreath and Bake sale.
