Memes in the Classroom

Gumnior Fall 2015

Memes in the Classroom Note: This assignment is “turned in” using Evernote.

In preparation for this first project, I asked you to read the text assigned to your group very carefully and thoroughly and to be very familiar with it. Familiarity with this text is key to this project.

STEP 1 If you have never formally learned to write a summary, look through the information provided in the notebook to figure out the hows and whys of summary writing. • “The Art of Summarizing” from Gerald Graff and Cathy Birkenstein’s book They Say, I Say: The Moves that Matter in Academic Writing • "Writers Workshop" resources from the Center for Writing Studies at the University of Illinois Even if you have covered summary writing in high school, a quick review of the information might help you get into the right mindset for this task. Then write a summary of the text. Keep the length to between 100 and 150 words.

STEP 2 Find five (5) quotations from all parts of the text that, in your opinion, represent the key points of the text. Then go to one of the meme generator programs such as Imgur, mememaker, memeful, or imgflip. You can use the images on any of these sites or find your own on the web or even use your own fotos. Choose your images carefully and make a meme series with the quotations you have identified. You can, if necessary, paraphrase the quotations, i.e. use your own words without changing the meaning of the text. As much as possible though, try to use verbatim (word for word) versions.

Evaluation Criteria: Make sure that your series is coherent: the series should • clearly represent the source text • tell a “story" • be engaging for the reader/viewer • be memorable in some way

The point of this project is to practice summarizing, paraphrasing, and synthesizing a text and have some fun in the process. Gumnior Fall 2015

ALL MEMBERS OF GROUPS 3 AND 4: After 4:00pm on Wednesday, please look up the projects of your peers. Us the evaluation criteria above to assess the success of each project.
