Topic Of Lesson: Transition Activities In The Daily Schedule

Mandy Bass Activity Idea #1 Schedules, Routines, etc Flannel Board Stories

Topic of lesson: A transition activity

Grade level: Kindergarten (or preschool to early elementary as well)

Concept/ Objectives: The idea of using transition activities is so the children can calm down and get ready for whatever is happening next, whether they are finishing lunch or getting ready to start it, getting ready to go outside, or getting ready to do a class project.

Teacher Background: There really is not anything the teacher needs to know or be aware of prior the lesson except maybe some interests of the children, such as books they really love, topics they like to read about, etc.

Preparation: Gather the needed materials. Be familiar with the story you are using.

Materials: *Flannel Board *Story/ Book *Flannel board pieces for the story

Procedure: As the children are preparing to move to a different activity, whether it be eating lunch, starting an in-class project, or going out of the classroom for something, have the children sit down in a designated area. When at least half of the class is seated, begin the story. The others should join the group very quickly. (They may be using the restroom, washing their hands, putting something away…) After the story, you may want to have a short discussion on the story, then give directions as to what the children should do next.

Accommodations: I don’t believe that there need be any accommodations made for students for this activity. All this activity requires is for the students to sit and listen to a story. However, make sure all the children are able to see the flannel board and hear the story.

Assessment: You can assess the children on how well they are paying attention. Have a discussion to see if they understand the basic idea/ concept of the story. Also, if you do an activity with the story, you can use what they do for that as an assessment.

Extensions: You could do an activity of some sort to go with the story. For example you could have the children draw a picture of their favorite part of the story or have them write about the story. Use your imagination and find something that fits with the particular story! You could also have the children use the flannel board pieces to tell their own story or tell the story from their view. This might be a good thing to put in a center area. Mandy Bass Activity #1

Technology: Incorporate Kid Pix or another familiar program into the story. The children can create their own pictures of the story or something of that nature.

Assessment: Have a discussion with the students after the story to talk about how they liked the book, etc. This only needs to last a couple of minutes, but is up to the individual teacher’s discretion.

Suggestions for books to use: The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Mixed-Up Chameleon by Eric Carle There was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly The Napping House or The Napping House Wakes Up by Audrey Wood

There are many other books out there that could work well. Be creative! Use some stories you may remember from your childhood!
