WHITE HILDEBRAND OF 14 RICHLAND COUNTY, AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST 15 SYMPATHY TO HER LARGE AND LOVING FAMILY AND 16 HER MANY FRIENDS. 17 18 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were 19 saddened to learn of the death of Doris A. White Hildebrand at the 20 age of seventythree on January 31, 2015; and 21 22 Whereas, born in San Antonio, Texas, on September 27, 1941, she 23 was the daughter of the late Alvis and Lovie McKinney White and 24 received Christ at an early age at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist 25 Church in San Antonio, Texas; and 26 27 Whereas, Mrs. Hildebrand moved to Columbia in 1969 with her 28 beloved husband, James, and their two fine children, James Eric 29 and Karen Dionne, and she became a devoted member of Jones 30 Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Zion Church. Until her 31 death, she and her husband were married for fiftythree years and 32 delighted in their four grandchildren; and 33 34 Whereas, she served the church as president of the Sanctuary 35 Choir for many years and as chair and secretary of the Board of 36 Stewards. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, member of the 37 Methodist Women, and Life Missionary Member of the Women’s 38 Home and Overseas Missionary Society (WHOMS). She 39 ministered to the Buds of Promise Choir for children and on the 40 Christian Service and Social Action Committee. She was honored 41 with the Pastor’s Special Recognition Award for Exemplary 42 Spiritual Growth; and

[430] 2 1 2 Whereas, when the doctor for whom she worked retired in 1985, 3 Mrs. Hildebrand retired as well, but she became active in 4 community affairs, serving as the president of the Waverly 5 Neighborhood Improvement and Protection Association (WNIPA), 6 and was lovingly referred to as the “mayor” of Waverly; and 7 8 Whereas, she was heavily involved in the Columbia Council of 9 Neighborhoods (CCN) in the City of Columbia, initiating 10 numerous projects in her neighborhood, notably the beginning of 11 revitalization of the Historic Waverly neighborhood. She realized 12 a longtime goal in the designation of the neighborhood as an 13 historical design area; and 14 15 Whereas, Mrs. Hildebrand’s deep community involvement 16 extended to such organizations as the BenedictAllen Community 17 Development Corporation, Columbia Housing Development 18 Corporation, Historic Columbia Foundation, STARS Community 19 Advisory Board of the United Black Fund, and Development 20 Review Commission for the City of Columbia Design; and 21 22 Whereas, she tenaciously lived her motto of “Do what you can 23 while you can” and was recognized for exemplary community 24 service with numerous awards, such as the Columbia Council of 25 Neighborhoods Friend of the Year Award and induction into the 26 Columbia Council of Neighborhoods Hall of Fame in 2011; and 27 28 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are grateful 29 for the life and legacy of Doris Hildebrand and for the example of 30 sacrifice and kindness she set for all who knew her. Now, 31 therefore, 32 33 Be it resolved by the Senate: 34 35 That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, 36 express their profound sorrow, upon the passing of Doris A. White 37 Hildebrand of Richland County, and extend their deepest 38 sympathy to her large and loving family and her many friends. 39 40 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to 41 the family of Doris A.
