City of Salinas Animal Shelter Ad Hoc Volunteer Committee Wednesday, June 24th, 2015 6:00 PM

1. Call to order: The meeting was called to order at 6:00 P.M. 2. Roll Call: Members present: Debra Long, Leigh Jeter, Yolanda Hayes, Gordon Pezzini Members absent: Darla Smith Staff present: Manager Cindy Burnham

3. Review of Minutes: Leigh made a motion to accept the minutes from March 25th and May 27th. Debra seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.

4. Public Comments: none

5. New Business/Old Business: a. Cindy administered the Appointment of Oath to Yolanda Hayes. b. Community Meetings Sub Committee: It was voted to table the community meetings at this time until we have a full board. Leigh made the motion to table and Gordon seconded. It was approved unanimously. c. Annual Report Sub Committee: No new info at this time, but Debra, Leigh and Darla plan on getting together soon. d. Spay/Neuter Sub Committee: Leigh sent Steve McShane an email to get his thoughts about trying to pass this ordinance. She hasn’t heard back yet. Advisory members will continue to try to meet with their council member and get their input.

6. Mangers Report: a. Shelter Stats and Update: Cindy went over stats, comparing March-May 2014 to 2015. b. Special Programs/Projects/Tasks: Cameras have been installed but are not up and running quite yet. Once that project is complete, we will continue getting quotes to get our kennels covered, starting in adoptions. There was enough money raised to get the yards landscaped. Leadership of Salinas Valley put on a great event at the shelter last week. Hope to get the yards done in the next 4-6 weeks. Our next event will be our big Howl-o-ween event in October and is tentatively planned for October 24th. c. Areas of Concern: Cindy has a new promotional position, Police Services Administrator, at the Police Department so the Animal Services Manager Position is now vacant. As the County Shelter also has a vacant Operations Manager position, the City and County are in discussions to determine if it is feasible to combine services or departments. They are looking into the hiring of a consultant to evaluate those possibilities, which will take months. Until that is worked out, SAS will not be able to recruit for that position, or any other new positions. Cindy has offered suggestions in order to expedite the process but it will take time. We were able to get a full time Animal Care Technician on 6/23/15 which fills a spot left vacant in February. Also, furloughs for full time employees end the week of 7/6/15 which, while sad for some, will help with the workload a bit. d. New Items for discussion: None.

7. Commissioner Reports: Nothing from Gordon. Leigh emailed Steve but is awaiting a response. Debra spoke with Tony and has an appointment to meet with him Mon am. Yolanda spoke briefly with Jyl about our last meeting. Jyl forwarded Yolanda some info from Contra Costa County with some ideas that Yolanda would like to talk to about in a meeting in the future.

8. Roundtable: Leigh suggested that instead of us going to City Council meetings and speaking under public comments, a presentation to the City Council would give us more time to speak and get our points/issues across. 9. Adjournment: 7:13 pm
