ELECTIVE IN CHILD PSYCHIATRY

Site: Child Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, Rush University Medical Center

Time: One month

Goals: The medical student will become familiar with the process, tasks, and goals of the diagnostic assessment and treatment of children and adolescents. The medical student will become familiar with various treatment modalities and the multidisciplinary treatment team.

Objectives:

1. To introduce the basic techniques of interviewing children of various age groups, interviewing parents and collecting data from other sources, (school, social agencies, etc.) 2. To conceptualize the difference between a child and adult diagnostic evaluation. 3. To be able to outline a reasonable differential diagnosis and make recommendations for appropriate treatment. 4. To become familiar with theories of child development. 5. To develop a knowledge of pediatric psychopharmacology and the use of psychotropic medications. 6. To develop a working knowledge of psychopathology in children and adolescents. 7. To familiarize the resident with psychotherapeutic techniques including individual, group, and family therapy. 8. To develop an understanding of the interaction of the treatment team and the concept of the multidisciplinary staffing.

Method: Medical students will work with the treatment teams of the 4 Kellogg Inpatient Unit, the Rush Day School, the Outpatient Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Clinic, and the Medication Clinic. Medical students will be assigned children and adolescents to follow under the supervision of the child psychiatry residents and attendings. The Medical students will participate in seminars, departmental meetings, treatment groups, staffings and family meetings scheduled for assigned patients. Diagnostic evaluations with the assigned resident, inpatient follow-up, and patient staffings will be scheduled Monday through Friday before and after scheduled seminars.
