Unit Overview Title Parts of Speech- Verbs (Action and Linking) Focus Questions 1. How can you find an action verb in a sentence? 2. How can you find a linking verb in a sentence? Unit Summary The purpose of this unit is to help ESL students know how to correctly identify and use action and linking verbs in a sentence. This unit will help ESL students better understand the English Language. It will also help ESL students improve their English speaking skills. Subject Area(s): Language Arts-Parts of Speech: Verbs for English Language Learners

Grade Level: 4th (can be 3rd-5th) Standards: Language Arts- Standard 1: Language Technology- Standard 1 and Standard 3 TESOL- Standard 1 and Standard 2

Essential Academic Learning Requirements: 0401.1.1 Know and use appropriately the meaning, forms, and functions of nouns (including singular and plural, common and proper, singular and plural possessives), verbs (including action and linking, regular and irregular forms, correct tenses, agreement in person and number with both simple and compound subjects), adjectives (including proper comparison forms, articles), pronouns (including subject, object, and possessive; singular and plural; agreement with antecedents), and adverbs (i.e., proper comparison forms, negatives). SPI 0401.1.2 Identify the correct use of verbs (i.e., agreement, tenses, action and linking) within context. Technology Standards: Standard 1: Students will understand basic operations and concepts of technology. Standard 3: Students will use technology productivity tools.

TESOL Standards: Standard 1: ELL’s communicate for social, intercultural, and instructional purposes within the school standard. Standard 2: ELL’s communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of Language Arts. Unit Scope and Sequence Students will:  Complete a KWL chart on Action Verbs  Participate in the activity Write It, Do It, Say It  Participate in the activity Know That Verb  Practice Action Verbs with flashcards  Play Action Verb Bingo  Use computer activities to find action verbs in sentences  Take a quiz testing their knowledge of action verbs  Write in their journals what they think a linking verb is based upon their knowledge of action verbs  Learn a song about Linking verbs  Complete a worksheet where they identify the linking verbs in each sentence and draw a picture  Complete linking verb worksheet #2  Use computer activities to find linking verbs in sentences  Take a quiz based on their knowledge of linking verbs  Create a GoAnimate video comparing action verbs and linking verbs  Take a quiz to see if students know the difference between linking verbs and action verbs Student Assessment Formative  Students will participate in computer activities that will test their knowledge of the topics. The teacher will monitor work and students will be prompted to move on to the next level as needed. Summative  There will be quizzes on the computer to complete at the end of each lesson. The students will be given a grade from 0-100.

Unit Implementation Instructional Strategies Grouping Options Scaffolds Unit Introduction: To introduce the unit I plan Whole Group  KWL chart on Using a KWL Chart for verbs. There will be  Linking Verbs song lyrics a game for the Action verbs lesson and there *both links on Wiki will be a song for the linking verbs lesson. Activity 1: Action Verb Bingo. The students Whole Group  Bingo Card will be asked to write the correct verb above  Action verb Picture review the picture on the Bingo card. Once they have sheet 3 in a row they will have to say and demonstrate the action verbs. Activity 2: The students will be given a piece Whole Group  Worksheet with sentences of paper with 10 sentences on it. The will be *link on wiki asked to underline the linking verb in each sentence. Accommodation Options Accommodations for Students They will be given more time to work on their activities and assignments will with IEPs be reduced if needed. Highly-Capable Students They will be asked to play the higher level on computer games. Management/Organization Tips  Each group will have a specific work station. Students will rotate between assignments so everyone gets all 3 assignments complete and everyone gets to use the computers.  The groups will have a large amount of space to work so that they can have the space they need and the noise level will not affect their work.
