Scene 4 – News Break
Flash a The Robotics Channel News logo for three seconds. Interior newsroom, day. GAYLE BROOKS, attractive news anchor, sits at desk with a graphic overlay sitting above her left shoulder.
GAYLE Good evening. This is Stephanie Gabos from TRC News. Coming up at 11, an autonomous helicopter designed and built at Carnegie Mellon helps rescuers at the crash site of Omega Airlines Flight 376. You’ll also see how kids learn by building their own robots at RoboCamp. And finally, we’ll take you down to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in Pittsburgh for a sneak peek of a robotic tour guide named “Sage”. Tune in at 11 for the full story.
Scene 5 - Weather
Cut to weatherman, ALLEN, in front of blue screen map of United States.
ALLEN And weather across the nation is calm again. The Robotics Channel EnviroBlimp is roving the skies right now giving us an accurate report. Temperatures at 11. Scene 6 - Late Night Teaser
Cut to “The Even Later Show with Jerry Winters” graphic overlay aside a dramatic picture of “Doc” Beardsley, Jerry Winters himself as a voice over.
JERRY Hey folks, this is Jerry Winters from the “The Even Later Show”. Tune into my RoboBowl special coming up right after the game, with a robotic guest named “Doc” Beardsley who I can honestly say is "not human"! See ya tonight!
Scene 7 - NavCar Commercial
We see classy smooth footage of the NavCar, possibly in slow motion, sweeping, whispy graphics supplement.
ANNOUNCER (VO) Style. (pause) Grace. (pause) Safety. (pause) But most of all… (pause) you never lift a finger. (pause) The Navcar… (pause) from Carnegie Mellon. (pause) It drives you.
Scene 8 – EyeVision Promotion
Graphic animation of RoboBowl III precedes shot of interior sports desk, night, with a stadium composited in the background. GUY JUNKER and STAN SAVRAN sit at the desk, stage left and stage right, respectively. We show clips from EyeVision in SuperBowl 35. NOTE : FOR THE BEST FLEXIBILITY IN EDITING, PLEASE ASSUME THAT WE’D LIKE TO USE CAMERA SHOTS OF THE ANNOUNCERS AT ANY MOMENT.
GUY (Junker) Good evening ladies and gentlemen, Guy Junker here! Welcome to our preshow for RoboBowl III! We’re live at the big game, coming to you from the fabulous new Carnegie Robotics Center. I’m joined tonight by senior analyst Stan Savran. Stan, are you excited? STAN (Savran) Guy, this is the premiere event of all robotic sports, how can I not be excited? Let’s show the folks at home what we’ve got cooked up tonight.
GUY Back during Superbowl 35 we saw the debut of a technology called “EyeVision”. (start clips from SuperBowl) This gave the television audience views of the action from any angle. An advanced version of this technology will be in place during tonight’s game, thanks to the efforts of researchers at Carnegie Mellon University, under the direction of Takeo Kanade. Scene 9 – Showcase RoboBowl Action
STAN It’s a great time to be a sports fan Guy. I sure wish we had EyeVision at last year’s RoboBowl. No one can forget that controversial call in the final moments of the game.
Show RoboBowl action and project our own story onto the footage.
STAN (CONT’D) Referees ruled this shot a goal but there was controversy over whether the ball actually broke the plane of the goal line. These little machines can pack quite a kick into that ball, and they display mind-blowing artificial intelligence to decide what to do with it when the pressure’s on.
RoboBowl III graphic pans across screen. In preparation for the commercial break.
GUY And the pressure is certainly on tonight Stan as Carnegie Mellon fights for the greatest prize in all of robotic sports, the RoboBowl! But the championship isn’t the only thing on the line, is it Stan? Tell us what’s in store for the robots who win tonight.
STAN Well Guy they will be enshrined right here at the Carnegie Robotics Center in the Robot Hall of Fame, right alongside the likes of R2D2 and the Terminator!
GUY And you can’t beat that Stan. We’re going to take a quick break, but don’t change that channel because the kickoff is coming right up when we return. You’re watching RoboBowl III on TRC!
Scene 10 – Industrial Robotics (Demeter)
We see Demeter the autonomous harvester from the back.
ANNOUNCER (VO) She’s not like the others. She’s up and running early in the morning. She’ll harvest this field all by herself, never a complaint, never a break,
Demeter has finally pulled around to reveal that there is no driver.
and you’ll never see her sweat. Hard working robots like Demeter are changing the way we feed the world.
Scene 11 – Medical Robotics (United Way dramatic style)
Doctors use medical technology on patients like hip replacement and visualization screens.
ANNOUNCER (VO) Carnegie Mellon University and West Penn Hospital are joining hands to make Pittsburgh a better place to live. Doctors can now perform incredibly accurate hip replacement surgeries. Visualization research enables surgeons to see exactly where a patient’s tumor resides before the doctor even puts on the gloves.
Pearl helps an elderly woman take her medication.
ANNOUNCER (VO) (CONT’D) And when it comes to patient care, autonomous mobile robots like Pearl are taking medicine to the next level. The Carnegie Mellon Robotics Institute and the doctors and staff at West Penn Hospital are providing a safer haven for you and your family. For there is no greater gift we can give, than the gift of life.
Scene 12 – Biography (Red Whittaker)
We show footage from an interview with Red Whittaker and shots of his robotic projects in action.
ANNOUNCER (VO) His robots have gone to all continents, both poles, and to the bowels of volcanoes. He has transformed the view of what’s possible with robotics. Join us Monday, 9 PM Eastern, as we profile the father of field robotics, Red Whittaker…on “TRC Biographies”.
RoboBowl 2002 Scene 13 – Corporate Sponsors & Commentary
RoboBowl III logo sweeps in, with corporate sponsors shown alongside the logo but not mentioned verbally. Scene 14 – RoboLand Promotion Camera returns to sports desk with stadium view.
GUY We’re back at RoboBowl III with the kickoff just moments away and I couldn’t be more excited, Stan.
STAN It’s been a great week Guy, here at the Carnegie Robotics Center. All week long we saw the latest and greatest in robotics at the RoboExpo, the Robot Hall of Fame, and the hands-on exhibits. And just to cap it all off, we’re broadcasting from the greatest arena in all robotic sports. All this was made possible by the top- notch robotics of Carnegie Mellon University.
GUY That’s right Stan. This place has really established Pittsburgh (STAN starts to notice the floor director signaling that the kickoff is beginning) nationally as “RoboBurgh”, and speaking of-
Referee whistle blows, camera pans to Kickoff.
CUT TO: Scene 15 – Kickoff & Finale
STAN Oh…Guy, I hate to cut you off but they’re signaling for the kickoff. Let’s go down to the field for RoboBowl III!
We see the robots just about to kickoff. Zoom into the robot and the ball frozen, then put the action back in motion with sound effects. Then we throw up our final splash screen with the ever important catch phrase, “The ball is in your court”.
