COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduction to University Life is a one-credit course required for all first year students. This class meets one hour per week throughout the semester. Students will be graded on a Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory basis. In order to obtain a satisfactory grade, students must complete all assignments, participate during class, and follow established attendance policies.

COURSE GOALS: . To become familiar with the mission, policies and procedures of CSU . To introduce students to the nature and value of higher education . To help students make a smooth transition to college . To help students learn skills that will enable them to succeed academically . To serve as a forum in which students can ask questions and share experiences with fellow students, faculty, advisors, and mentors. . To create an atmosphere in which students can discuss issues that they have encountered as newly-admitted CSU students . To work toward establishing and achieving short and long term goals . To embrace and nurture an understanding of diversity as it relates to living in a multicultural community

COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: . Students will demonstrate their knowledge of how and where to access information and services that promote student learning at the University. . Students will demonstrate knowledge of the University’s internal structure, policies, and procedures that impact student degree attainment (e.g., knowledge of general education requirements, course grading policy, university grading system, college requirements, etc.) . Students will demonstrate the ability to access information and use technology in a manner that supports their ability to meet course assignment requirements (i.e., how to collect and evaluate information; ability to use CampusNet, navigate CSU website, email, and WebCT; compose a paper in Microsoft Word and send it as an attachment, etc.) . Students will demonstrate satisfactory levels of oral communication and written competency through written course assignments and presentations. . Students will learn important academic learning strategies and personal, intellectual, social development skills that will enhance their academic success and human potential.

You are now a member of a community of scholars that has standards of excellence in behavior, academic conduct, and citizenship in the University. In light of these expectations, the following are in place:

ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is mandatory in this class. Absence from class will affect the grade.

In addition to the above general standards, all students are expected to adhere to:

No cellphones, pagers, or headphones use in class

No working on other course assignments.

No reading of outside material in class.

ACADEMIC STANDARDS: All assignments should be word-processed / typed unless otherwise noted, using standard academic style: double-spaced on one side only of white, 8.5” x 11” paper with 1” top/bottom margins and 1.5” left/right margins, and no larger than size 12 font. Written assignments should adhere to Standard Written English, including proper sentence structure, grammar, and spelling. Slang terms, jargon, and swearing or other inappropriate language are not permitted. Citations should follow either the APA (used mostly in the Social Sciences)or MLA (used in English 101/102 and the Humanities) Guidelines, both of which can be accessed through the Virtual Reference Portal on The Cleveland State University Library webpage.

All university work should reflect a devotion to academic honesty. As found in The Code of Student Conduct: “The Cleveland State University Academic Community values honesty and integrity and holds its members to high standards of ethical conduct. Academic dishonesty is, therefore, unacceptable, and students must be prepared to accept the appropriate sanctions for any dishonest academic behavior as outlined in this policy on academic misconduct.” (17) Such conduct includes cheating, plagiarism, and tampering.
