Parent Letter from Mr. William A. Martin

Robert Louis Stevenson Middle School

Room 111

6th Grade Math, Science and Health 2016 - 2017

Dear Parents,

My name is Mr. W. Martin and your son/daughter is enrolled in my Math and Science/Health class this school year. I am looking forward to an exciting year. It is my goal to provide all students with an educationally challenging, yet fun, experience in my classroom.

Math and Science are very demanding courses. We will cover 13 chapters of Earth Science, 10 Chapters of Teen Health, 10 Chapters of Drug and Alcohol Awareness and 5 Common Core Mathematical Content Standards blended with College Preparatory Mathematics (CPM) in 40 weeks. There will be homework assignments almost daily. Each student will need a single subject notebook, a pocket folder, blue or black pens and pencils, geometry tool set, pocket calculator and a 150 page spiral notebook. These materials should be brought to class every day. A set of all these materials are displayed in my classroom and can be bought at any 99 cent store in our community for no more than about 6 to 7 dollars. There is a limited supply of materials available for students in my class. We cover a lot of material in each class period so please make sure you child is present and prepared to learn each day.

Hopefully, your son/daughter has brought home their course syllabus and you have both read and will sign it each week when your child shows you their weekly progress grades. Hopefully in this school you, you will have access to your child’s grades and assignments through our new MSIS program. I have written a cover sheet on the syllabus explaining the class rules and procedures. On the last page, you will see my grading rubrics and an explanation of each grade mark. If you have any questions regarding the syllabus or the course, please contact me.

I have extremely high expectations of all my students, and for that I will not apologize. I am asking for your help to maintain those expectations by checking with your son/daughter periodically to make sure that his/her work is being done. I am available to help students individually before school, during my prep periods, and after school. I have included a copy of the course syllabus with this letter. If you would like me to notify you of test dates and/or update you on your son/daughter’s progress, please visit our school website at: www.rlstevenson.net. Click on the tab that reads “Students”. The first tab under that is “Classes/Homework”. Find my name, “Mr. W. Martin” and click on the assignments to the right of my name. If you see the word “New”, then something is due that week. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 323-780-6400, extension 111 or by email at [email protected] if you have any questions or concerns during the year.

Thank you,

Mr. William A. Martin
