I could have been as great as Abraham Lincoln But for an unjust law For look at the diploma I received from Michigan, the University The first woman from that institute to receive a Ph.D., Living the life my mother never could. But there was that old, debated question: Who should vote men, blacks, or women? Then ISNU, an Illinois school, hired me Asking me to educate, to enlighten young minds, And I moved to Normal, teaching English to countless students, And began my quest for suffrage. It was all beginning for me, When I became Dean of Women. While I taught, wrote, and lead I still could not vote, oh how ironic Hear me, ambitious women, Sex is the curse of life!
