Caring with Confidence Understanding Dementia Understanding Dementia course for carers supporting someone in the mid-stages of dementia. This course provides information about what is dementia, treatments and coping strategies, money matters and decision making as well as support for carers. Caring for a child with additional needs and thinking about challenging behaviour Parents of children with additional needs often tell us that they find some of the accompanying behaviour difficult to deal with. This course explored methods of coping with this behaviour and to develop personal coping strategies. VOCAL Carer Centre 17th September – 1st October 10-12.30pm
Enteral, PEG and tube feeding A course exploring when and how the decision for enteral feeding takes place and the implications for carers and the people they support. VOCAL Carer Centre 24th September & 1st October 10-2.30pm
Do you have debt? Or Are you worried about paying the bills? Illness, disability and caring can all be expensive and it can be hard to make ends meet. Many carers find themselves in debt or supporting someone with debt. This seminar provides advice and support on ways to address debt issues, giving practical strategies and tips about how to reduce payments, take payment holidays and deal with bankruptcy. Connections, Choices & Change A lifestyle management course for carers using solution focussed therapy techniques, providing an opportunity to explore key issues such as health and well being and time management VOCAL Carer Centre 6th October - 10th November 10-1pm
Planning for an Emergency This course addressed carers concerns about what would happen in an emergency situation and provided space and resources for practical action planning. VOCAL Carer Centre 7th October - 21st October 10-12.30pm
An introduction to Personal Independence Payments (PIP) Personal Independence Payments will replace Disability Living Allowance (DLA) for people with health problems age 16 and over. At this seminar you will learn more about PIP, who will be eligible and how it will interact with other benefits. VOCAL Carer Centre - 8th October 10-12.30pm
Introduction to SDS Self Directed Support will change the way that services and support for people who are ill, elderly or disabled will be offered. Join for an introduction to Self Directed Support, assessments, process and how it might affect your situation. This session will provide information about direct payments and support to use them. VOCAL Carers Centre 16th October 10-1pm Caring for someone with mental health issues and thinking about behaviour This course will provide an opportunity to explore topics such as the effects of different illnesses and the effects of medication on behaviour. As well as key issues including motivation, aggression, low mood and strategies to help carers with these areas. VOCAL Carers Centre 12th & 19th November 6pm—8pm
Finding your voice This two part workshop will look at how to make your point effectively. Providing strategies and tips on how to speak up confidently, helping you make yourself heard. Lothian Autistic Society 27th November & 4th December 10am—1pm
What Follows School for young People with Autism or Additional Support Needs? This four session course answers many of the questions that parents of children with additional needs have as their child moves into adulthood. VOCAL Carers Centre 23rd October 2014 to 13th November 10am—1pm
Do you care for someone with mobility problems? Join us for a tour of the Disabled Living Centre and Learn about the work of the centre and see a wide range of equipment to make life easier for someone with disabilities. There are large items such as chairs and beds through to smaller items such as kettle tippers and cutlery. Smart Centre, Astley Ainslie Hospital 17th November 10.30am—12pm
Adapting your home A seminar explaining how carers and the people they support can have their homes adapted to meet their needs. Led by an Occupational Therapist this session explains topics such as assessments, ordering, payments and it will cover all types of property including social housing, landlord owned and privately owned. Do you worry about the person you support being home alone? Are you concerned about falls, wandering, leaving water taps, gas or the cooker on? Edinburgh Council Telecare Team have a range of equipment and gadgets to help the person you care for live safely. Come along to one of the seminars to find out what’s available to you and how Telecare could help you. VOCAL Carer Centre 30th October 10.30am—12pm
Manual handling training Over two, three hour sessions, learn practice and theory from experienced Physiotherapists. There is a chance to watch demonstrations, ask questions, and practise manual handling. Try helping someone in and out of bed, into a chair and out, use a hoist, help someone off the floor and much more. Training for Care, 12-14 Logie Green Road 6th & 13th November 10am—12.30pm

Time for Me A session for parents and carers of children using the Sick Children’s Hospital as in or out patients, focusing on how carers can manage stress, maintain good mental health and retain their own identity. Royal Hospital for Sick Children’s Drop-in Centre Saturday 28th October 10-2.30 & 8th November 10-12.30 Thinking about the emotional impact of caring Changing relationships Caring can impact on all our relationships, perhaps how we interact with the person we are supporting has changed, or there are changes in the way we spend time with family and friends. This course helps understand how our relationships work, what they mean to us and, how caring has affected them. We will also explore how change works, and how humans process change. Letting go and moving on Caring can be seen as a journey with many stages. Moving on to the next stage can be challenging as we face the unknown and leave our comfort zone. This course provides an opportunity to explore how we can prepare for, and cope with, this challenge. VOCAL Carer Centre 2nd October 10-2.30
Dealing with Guilt Many carers tell us they feel guilty about all sorts of things; the care they provide, leaving the person they care for at home, having fun, going to work etc. This session helps carers to explore the meaning and purpose of the feeling of guilt and to explore how to manage the guilt they experience. Time away from caring Gym Buddies Short courses bring together small groups of carers for exercise an social sessions. In small groups carers will be taught how to use the equipment, set a personalised programme and will be supported to follow it by a trained instructor. Royal Commonwealth Pool, 3rd September – 8th October, 7-9pm
Weight Management A weight management programme for carers giving dietary advice and exploring lifestyle and caring issues through solution focused techniques. Offered in partnership with Scottish Slimmers, all carers receive free Scottish Slimmers starter pack VOCAL Carer Centre, 9th September - 28th October, 10.30 - 12
Craft Circle Join Margaret for a coffee, a chat and an activity at craft circle. You don’t need to have any experience with arts and crafts. Just come along and give it a go.
