FORENSIC SCIENTIST - Questioned Document Unit

$37,525 – $66,712 (Advanced position)

Both of the NMDPS Laboratories are accredited by ASCLD/LAB. This position is located in the NMDPS Southern Forensic Laboratory, in Las Cruces.

The NMDPS Northern Forensic Laboratory is located in the enchanting city of Santa Fe, the State’s historic capitol, at the foot of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Santa Fe is a tri-cultural community, enjoys 300+ days of sunshine each year, and has world class museums and opera, galleries, and nearby skiing. Santa Fe is frequently ranked in the top ten world travel destinations.

The NMDPS Southern Forensic Laboratory is located in Las Cruces, at the foot of the Organ Mountains. Las Cruces, also a tri-cultural community, is known for its year-round warm climate, 300+ days of sunshine, hiking and other outside activities, and is home to New Mexico State University. PURPOSE OF POSITION To conduct scientific analyses of the most complex physical evidence, for the presence of controlled substances; Interpret technical findings and prepare formal reports, present results and conclusions as an expert witness in New Mexico courts.

EDUCATION Bachelor’s degree, with at least six semester or other equivalent credit hours in physical or natural science courses.

EXPERIENCE Four years experience in a crime laboratory, performing independent forensic examinations of questioned document evidence. A Master’s degree from an accredited college or university, in the aforementioned fields, may substitute for one year of experience.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT Applicants selected are subject to a thorough background investigation, pre-employment and random drug testing.

WORKING CONDITIONS  Work is performed in a laboratory setting and may require periodic overtime work. Travel is required (automobile and/or aircraft), for periodic appearances in court and training responsibilities.  Exposure to evidence potentially containing biohazards.
