Aboriginal Artists – Materials and Supplies Assistance 2016-17 Guidelines and Application

Purpose

To support First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists working in the visual arts, crafts or traditional/ customary Indigenous art forms to create art work. The program provides grants of $500 towards the cost of buying art materials and supplies. Eligible art forms

The grants are open to First Nations, Inuit and Métis artists working in visual art and craft art forms, including:  basketry (birch bark,  jewellery  quillwork black ash, willow, etc.)  leather work  sculpture  beading  metal work  tamarack  birch bark work  mixed media/installation  textile art (embroidery,  carving  moccasin making quilts, etc.)  drawing  painting  traditional dance regalia  drums, rattles and  photography  tufting instruments  pottery  wood working  glass  printmaking Who can apply?

You are eligible to apply to this program if you:  are an Ontario-based First Nations, Inuit or Métis artist  live in Ontario for at least 8 months of the year;  have lived in Ontario for at least one year before your application; and  are a Canadian citizen Eligible and ineligible expenses

Eligible:  Materials and supplies: wood, fabric, thread, stone, leather hides, sinew, beads, needles, photographic printing, inks, metals, paint, canvas, paper, pencils

Aboriginal Artists – Materials and Supplies Assistance APPLICATION 2016-17 ii  Small tools: for making the art work, or for harvesting or gathering materials, e.g. blades, carving tools, awls, scissors, etc.  Delivery: cost of transporting or shipping materials and supplies Not eligible:  Large equipment purchases (e.g. table saw, computers), studio set-up or renovations.  Materials and supplies for student projects in all education levels.  Business and promotional expenses, such as websites and business cards  Cost of producing a commercial production line, i.e. to have your designs manufactured by someone else. Who makes decisions about the grants?

Recommenders are organizations who are authorized by the Ontario Arts Council (OAC) to receive applications, review them and make recommendations for the grants in this program. Each of the recommender organizations listed below have been allocated a budget by OAC. Recommenders make decisions based on the quality of the artist’s work and other funding priorities they establish. Please note, because of the limited budget available and the number of applications we receive it is not possible to fund all eligible applications. Within six weeks of the application deadline the recommender will inform you whether your application will be funded. The recommender sends the application to OAC; OAC will mail the grant cheque directly to the artist. How to apply

Complete the application form, include 5 images or photos of your art work and send it to one of the Aboriginal organizations that are recommenders for this program (detailed contact information on page iv):

Recommenders may also be able to receive original examples of your art work but please call ahead to be sure they are accepted. Application deadlines:  Anemki Art Collective: November 1, 2016  Ojibwe Cultural Foundation: July 30 and September 30, 2016  Woodland Cultural Centre: October 14, 2016 and January 13, 2017.  Neto accepts applications at any time, starting in July 2016, until the budget is spent. The program closes on February 17, 2017.

Restrictions

 You can receive one Materials and Supplies Assistance grant per OAC program year (April 1 – March 31).  You are not eligible to re-apply until you have reported on a previous grant in this program.  You are eligible to receive up to three project grants per calendar year. Multiple grants in a third party recommender program received in a year count as one grant. Third party recommender programs are: Aboriginal Artists Materials and Supplies Assistance (AAMSA); Exhibition Assistance; Theatre Creators’ Reserve; Writers’ Reserve.  Multiple grants received from the Aboriginal Artists in Schools and Artists in Education programs (Mentorship Initiative, Travel) in one year count as one grant. Reporting Within one year of the grant cheque date, you have to complete a brief report on how the grant was spent and include three images of the art work you created.
