Work experience
Legal Information Resources - Part time 1986 - 1994 During most school holidays and university vacations I worked at Legal Information Resources as a general assistant.
Page 1 For my A-level computer science project I developed and sold a system to LIR, to take orders by telephone, schedule delivery (of photocopied articles from legal journals), produce invoices and automatically calculate taxes and royalty payments.
Legal Information Resources - Full time 1994 - 1997 After graduation I returned to LIR and worked initially as an IT assistant, I quickly took on more responsibility and became the lead programmer. My job title became network manager: · Day to day management of a team · Specification and budgeting of IT equipment · Installation and maintenance of a computer network · Production quality programming (VB/Delphi/C) · On-site and telephone customer support
In 1995 Legal Information Resources was bought by Sweet & Maxwell - part of Thomson Corporation. With this some existing Sweet & Maxwell products and processes were moved to our offices, my management responsibilities grew correspondingly.
Sweet & Maxwell - Legislation Content Centre - Design Lead - 1997 - 1999 Over the course of 1996 and 1997 I worked with our parent company's technology consultancy TTCG on the design and specification of a new multi-million pound software system – the Legislation Content Centre.
This involved: · working with internal users to specify the system as they would use it · meeting customers to find out their requirements · meeting contacts from various government departments to find out their experiences in trying to build a similar system (they were building a similar system at the time which we were initially going to use - it is still not finished!) · travelling to Washington to liase with the American arm of TTCG on work to use their new publishing systems · working with TTCG consultants in London on initial design and specification
It quickly became apparent that TTCG were too expensive and unlikely to deliver even a prototype within the time-frame we needed. I came up with a rough budget and very aggressive program to get a system working, using in-house programming, as quickly as possible - we had already started hiring people (to use the non-existent system) who would have nothing to do. This was accepted and I was given a large pay rise - if I got it working in time.
I took on more staff and we quickly developed a working system - in less time than proposed for the prototype. This system, though developed in haste, was designed and built well and is still in use - I still get asked questions by developers from Sweet & Maxwell.
I had to quickly learn: · SGML / DTD design · Relational database design · Object oriented programming (mainly Delphi - some C/C++) Page 2 · To work under immense pressure · To prioritise development without sacrificing robustness · To manage a team of developers
In 1997 Sweet and Maxwell moved to new premises. I took responsibility for the specification, budgeting and project management of the installation of the computer network, new servers, electrical system and the cabling for the telephone system.
Sweet & Maxwell - Australia 1999 - 2000 For two weeks at the end of 1999, I visited Sweet & Maxwell's sister company Law Book Company in Sydney. They were starting a similar project to our legislation content centre. There were representatives from several other companies competing for the project. I successfully presented our system. I was then asked to return for nine months to help implement the Australian version of the system. However I had already given notice so only returned to Australia for 3 months.
Granite & Comfrey - Technical Director 2000 - 2003 Along with several colleagues I set up Granite & Comfrey. I took the role of Technical Director with responsibility for all decision-making regarding software development and implementation. This company was to perform editorial services on behalf of and provide software to legal clients. I designed, implemented and project-managed a number of software products, to very aggressive time-scales and to very tight budgets: · Know How System KHS · Intranet content management system IntraFind · www.business-auctions.com · HierEd / Taxonomy Editor
The Know-How System and the HierEd were both wholly designed and implemented by myself and my team. They have both been very successful and have won industry sector awards. (E-Lotties)
In this role I also have gained a large amount of experience in both pre- and post-sales contact with customers. As well as running the technical side of the company I maintained relationships with a wide-ranging spectrum of contacts, from back-room technical staff through to senior partners in top-ten world-class law firms.
Tikit 2003-2004 - Technical Director In 2003 we sold Granite & Comfrey to Tikit Ltd. I continued to work as Technical Director of the know-how department before moving to the London office to be available to meet with customers more easily and to transfer knowledge to the London based development team. The change in location allowed me to spend more time with customers and focus on improving our customer relations.
During this time I also spent time integrating our KHS system with, and gained a working knowledge of: iManage document management system (now called Interwoven) Hummingbird / PC Docs document management system
Page 3 Verity, full-text search and indexing software Lawport, an American legal Intranet portal InterAction, a CRM system
I also got a chance to get an early working knowledge of: Microsoft .net platform, especially VB.net, C# and the .net web services Java / Cold fusion
Career break - 2004 - 2005 In 2004 I decided to take a career break. This has lasted for about 18 months now. During that time I have been quite busy:
European tour - I bought an old bus (1974 Plaxton Panorama Elite) that had already been converted to a motorhome but was not in a roadworthy condition. I spent several months repairing this and getting it through its MOT in Exeter before driving back to Yorkshire and doing some more repairs to the engine. In June 2004 my girlfriend and I set off to do a three month tour of Central Europe. See http://www.brahms.demon.co.uk/holidays
Vintage Radio collecting - Over the past few years I have acquired a number of vintage radios. During the past year I have spent a great deal of time learning about both modern and vintage circuit design and theory. I currently have about 15 vintage radios in my collection. I have also in the past month designed and built from scratch a valve-based amplifier. See http://www.brahms.demon.co.uk/software/electronics/ecl82_1/index.html
PIC programming - I have designed and built several projects using PIC microcontrollers for fun and also to build test equipment for use with my other electronics projects. I have also written some open source software to assist with PIC programming.
Java Mobile programming – Over the past year I have developed a number of Mobile phone applications and games.
Contracting Euro RSCG Riley – Contracting April 2006 - present Since April this year I have worked on a number of projects (using SQL Server, Visual Studio 2003, ASP.Net and ASP) as a freelance for Euro RSCG Riley. I have had my contract extended several times (to work on new projects). My contract is now ending due to budgetary constraints.
